Pretty simple one, but Hell.

Evangelion is creditted as being based on, or at least heavily influenced by, another anime featuring a giant robot that ended in a similar way.

1. What was the Anime?
2. Which Eva character seems to be based directly off of a character from that show (including their ultimate fate)?
3. What is the name of the character the Eva star was based off of?
