Man, how long can this thing drag out. Tsuji Mania, you're doing a bangup job here, you just missed one point; when Clara said that anime is different from cartoons because they're drawn differently, she must have forgotten that the big-eyed anime style was based off of Betty Boop, the AMERICAN CARTOON!
I've just been tempted to post again in this thread for way too long and I finally gave in. ^^

Ok, I've been out for awhile, but now it's time to respond to some things that were said after my last post.
------------------------
For what Tsuji said:
So, "Anime" means "Animation", right? And I suppose that "Cartoon" is the American word for "Animation"? NO! "Animation" is the American word for "Animation"! So, just translating the words isn't going to make them the same. And besides, are we in Japan? Are we speaking Japanese? NO!! We're speaking English, and so "Anime" means "Japanese Animation!"
So, Cartoons are humorous sketchs? Well, Excel Saga and Dragon-Half are VERY FAR from just sketchs!!!!
If you wanted to turn any american Cartoon into an Anime, (like Rugrats as you mentioned) it would need more than just to be drawn like Anime. ALOT MORE! That's obvious.
When I mentioned that "Death is serious in your Standard Anime", I thought you would realize that Excel Saga insn't your Standard Anime! Excel Saga was the first Anime I thought of when writing that, and that's why I wrote "STANDARD ANIME"!!!!
What I should've said was, "If Death is serious 90% of the time in Anime, then Death is funny 90% of the time in Cartoons."
About the Love stuff. I said that Love actually has meaning in Anime. And it does!! Alot more than Cartoons anyway!! I didn't say that the Love was all pure or anything like that!!! It's just that there is alot more passion put into the love and sex scenes of Anime than the no passion for love found in Cartoons!! Even the rape in Hentai scenes have passion, creativity, and imaginitives to them.
I said that not all Anime and all Cartoons apply to what I said. Nor, am I lumping them all together. I'm just that Anime is Anime, Cartoons are Cartoons!
Yes, it is an insult to call anything something that it isn't. An Anime may have Cartoon-like situations, but it's still ANIME!!!!

About what alternatefutures said:
Even if the big-eyes in Anime were based from Betty Boop, that wouldn't make Anime and Cartoons drawn the same! THAT'S JUST ONE BODY PART!! (ok.... two) Cartoons don't use big-eyes anyways. Well, only sometimes, but it's not regulary on a Cartoon char like it is on Anime char.
And besides, the big-eyes in Anime look nothing like Betty Boop's. They didn't draw it to look like Betty Boop's eyes, they just liked the idea of big-eyes, so that was what they made.

Can't we all just say that Anime, Hentai, Ecchi are Otaku slang?
Anime = Japanese Animation
Hentai = Sex anime
Ecchi = Sexually provacative anime, doesn't go as far as hentai.
This is how it's accepted by millions of people ^_^
We don't go around saying "lets all go watch some Japanese Cartoons".
Japanese Animation is termed Anime because it's special, it comes from Japan. That makes it different from American animation.
