Berserk! 'Cause it left me speechless after the last ep. It raised my interested so high that it culminated in extreme pawning with last ep.

My favorite anime, ooh that's a hard question. I haven't even seen that many, only about 30, but a lot of those had both moments I really loved as well as big flaws. I suppose if I had to pick... well, I really liked Ai no Kusabi, and I really liked Utena.
Has there ever been an anime fan-academy awards? I think it would be easier and perhaps more useful to say which animes we thought were the best in certain categories, like music, line art, character histories, use of non-literal drawing (like SD, shadowplays, drawn metaphors), best humor, best story, best dialogue... I would say every anime is strong in some areas and weak in others.
If I were going to try to create an anime I think I would try to find an anime that was good at each category and analyze how the anime achieved that success, then try to design my anime to do the same and thus be strong in all areas. Not that I would necessarily succeed at making it strong in all areas, but I think it would be a good design strategy to start with.
So there's another question for you if you like: what advice would you give to someone trying to design the best-ever anime?

"Have come to the conclusion that fandom is not a hobby at all but rather a combination non-competitive sport/full-contact tea party. Only, like, the Mad Hatter's tea party, and the Dormouse is totally hitting on the March Hare." - Ins

Isn't the the subject of this topic the best anime ever and not all of your favorite anime series?
It's heard for me to pick what I think is the best anime I ever saw, but I think it is a tie between Berserk and Now and Then, Here and There. I like Berserk because of it's great action sequences and I like Now and Then, Here and There because of it's intense drama. And also because of Hamdo...I have a thing for bastard characters.
The Berserk series is not over. The last time I heard about it, the series is still continuing in Japan. I can't wait to see the next season, because it really is a great anime.bote wrote:Berserk! Hm, someone mentioned breaking an anime down into categories - which categories are we going by?
My favorite anime is Yu Yu Hakusho. Categories I can think of - things I like to see in an anime - include:
Romance = YYH has a variety of this (everything but yuri ;p )
Action = definitely, along with a wide variety of fighters and styles
Comedy = from the very beginning, not too much, not too little
Drama = can we say Sensui arc? drama in spades
Psy-fi = the pre-Sensui arc reminds me of Trekies or maybe xmen ;p
Gore = well sure, just look at Sensui's past
Angst = Hiei, need I say more? ^_^;
School = a genre more than a category, but school settings tend to be a plus
Samurai = another 'genre' but Genkai and her teachings fit this to a T
Fanservice = the announcer girls in the tournaments, and the bishies
Slap-stick comedy = not usually my favorite, but YYH pulls it off well without going overboard
Religion = lacking here, though the 'afterlife/reincarnation' theory gets expounded in detail
Murder/Intrigue = Toguro, Sensui, Raizen, into motives of very twisted psychos - watches like a 'thriller' novel
Cute dumb funny girls = Botan, she'd fit right into the shoujo Sailormoon type anime genre
Split Personalities = think Kenshin vs Battousai, Inuyasha vs Youkai Inuyasha, Kurama and Sensui are prime examples of this type of character depth
Shocks/Surprises = ever seen the end of Magic Knight Rayearth? Plot twists can definitely be a shocker when done right - YYH manages a killer one of these
Famly/Friendship = the stories that pull the heartstrings and just make characters endearing, this is what excells in Psychic Force, and definitely plays a large role in yyh
Yeah, name some more genres and categories typically found in 'good' or even 'popular' anime and I can probably find it in YYH. It gets passed off as a general action anime, but those who think that need to watch the last two arcs before they categorize it. Everything comes together in this anime, at least, everything I like to see in an anime.
