In some form yes It is a typoe of cartoon, however, nowadays you can't really call them cartoons because alot of anime are going digital with computerised affects. Its really animation now more than it is cartoon. But of course anime and cartoons don't mix. there is a very distinct line between them. so let me put it this way. We never call cartoons anime or anime cartoons. They come from different cultures, different style of design and have different restrictions.
Cartoons I don't think I've seen EVER go past M 15+ in the movies being stuck down for family and kids entertainment. And thats exluding all that cartoon porn junk thats out there because thats made by fan artists.
Anime however, has gone way past their limits, from G all the way to like... A-grade XXX-rated movies or whatever. Anime is for all audiences, well in Japan kids watch all that gruesome stuff you see, like berserk, hellsing and ninja scroll. But in european countries we have that stupid codes of practice bullshit.
Also you will notice that within anime, it is anatomically getting there, with a structure that is near perfect for figures. For cartoons... well they tend to have that sharp streak to them and small waistlines and triangular knee-caps. Don't ask...
There is a distinct difference. However both of them are a form of cartoon or in a better term, art. i would never call an anime cartoon or vice versa, they are separate entities.

ChaoticStormBringer, I agree with all of that with this exception.
Granted Cartoons and Anime are similar, but I wouldnt exactly call Anime a form of cartton either. If you'll allow me to edit ur sentence, I would call it all a form of Animation. However both of them are a form of cartoon or in a better term, art.
Yesterday I was having the same discussion with some other ppl and i drew out this flow chart that breaks down the different types of TV show (Live Action and Animationi) and from there broke it down even further. and had tv shows of each as examples. When i typed it out this is what it looked like.
Anything on TV
_______|______
| |
Live Action Animation-------------------------
_____| | |_____ |
| | | |
Anime CG Cartioons Animated TV Series
EX, Akira Shrek Bugs Bunny Family Guy
NGE Toy Story Tiny Toons The Simpsons
u can take it for what it is, but it looked alot better in theory.

One, that doesn't make them different - just because they draw opposites when it comes to number of people and storylines.Charizard305 wrote:*pulls out his CD Case and pulls out his Powerpuff Girls DVD ^_^ *. Dont worry ur not the only one out there.
I dunno, in my mind Anime and cartoons are totally different, cartoons were made for kids, have virtually no story line, and generally dont attact as big as a population as Anime. Where as anime is pretty much the opposite.
Two, American cartoons, attract alot of fans. I don't know why you think it doesn't. There are plenty of no name animes that don't make it off the ground and attract no attention, cause they are crap. American cartoons do have storylines, you insult Batman cartoon (the original one from early 90s) by saying that. Most of our movies here aren't made for cartoon like in Japan. We go for actors not voice actors, so our cartoon movies go to mostly kids. Although I don't know what kid would understand all of Shrek.
Anime is a japanese cartoon. Doesn't devalue it at all, get over it.
