Yay! I'm so happy for you! How is ZG different/better than the other Gundam series?darthblarg wrote:Just wait until CN releases Zeta Gundam. Now that is the finest Gundam series out there.
As for SD Gundam, all I can say is that I am glad my Stroke cancelled my heart attack.
You're lucky... I've decided to let you live to see the day when I will rule the world.

Zeta
Zeta is a series that really expands on the original.
First, the sucess of MSG allowed Tomino a greater budget for Zeta. With more $ at his disposal he could make it with the best tech the anime industry had at the time.
Second, the story is really first rate. The characters are fleshed out, with a streak of tragedy to be sure, but they are all really well done. Char and Amuro fight on the same side in this series, COOL!
Third, the action and animation quality are way better then the first series. The locations and enemy MS's change so much, and the MS on MS battle scales make for very few repeated destruction sequences. Zeta was made in 1985, the mid-eighties are the "Golden Age" of Anime, and this is a diamond amidst the treasure.

Any similarity between G and DBZ is low-grade and superficial at best:
The martial arts aspect is nothing new to anime, so to say that was just a DBZ rip-off is being pretty cheap to anime in general. Other than that, the only thing it's got that could be considered close would be the Super Mode...and even then, for all we know that has been done before Toriyama touched it
The background story about how it came to be:
Imagawa (the director) initially approached Sunrise with an idea for a war title, they turned it down, handed him a bunch of odd robot designs and said 'Make us a show with these!' so, he did the best he could with the tools he had (it should be worth noting that the Devil (Dark) Gundam was entirely his own creation in an attempt to give the story something to work with besides 'Fight! Fight! Fight!'
If G owes to any particular anime type, it pays more homage to the odd super robot titles of the 70s (stuff like Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Kotetsu Jeeg, Yuusha Raideen, UFO Robot Grendizer, etc, etc)
Hence the outlandish mecha and the yelled out ludicrous attack names (interestingly enough, one could theoretically argue that Chibodee Crockett paid some slight homage to Getter Robo's infamous Jack King...a blatantly American pilot who's robot 'Texas Mack' was a giant cowboy)
...there you have it

I like gundam, it's up there with Macross as best mecha anime.
The series I liked:
Gundam 0083
Gundam 08th MS team
Gundam Wing
Gundam Char's Counter Attack
Now, I haven't seen:
Zeta Gundam
Double Zeta Gundam (but I have the ZZ Gundam MG kit. Go figure)
All of Kido Senshi Gundam (I've only seen what CN showed, which was what? 20 or so eps? out of the 49.)
Gundam F91
Victory Gundam
Gundam X
Turn A Gundam
Gundam Seed
I'll agree with everyone that G Gundam was very over the top. It was quite ridiculous, but worth seeing once. (The Devil Gundam with those nano-regenerative stuff was actually cool.
Too bad it had to be limited to this series.
Oh and one more thing: ITS FRIGGIN NOT THE BURNING GUNDAM, ITS THE GOD GUNDAM!!
stupid overly religious people....ruining our anime...once...just once I wanted to hear him say "GOD finger!!". That would really have made me laugh.
Also, my mom jokes about the main character sounding like something you'd find in a Planters tin. Domon CASHEW!!! )
As for Gundam Wing, I thought it was quite good (and as far as the issue of "well, its a rehashed Original Gundam", I've read that Gundam SEED is almost a rehash of Zeta Gundam). Now, I know what everyone means about the "Invincible gundams", but they were techincally made with far stronger armor, and I don't think it had the highest budget for a 49 ep series.
In Endless Waltz the gundams get really torn up. That's probably why I liked it so much, as I like seeing damage (cause=effect). Also, probably why I liked Star Trek II out of all the ST movies....
Favoite series of all though...it's a toss up between 0083 and 08ths MS team. 0083 explores the experimental gundam route (the GP03 Dendrobium is my all time fav. Gundam), and 08th follows the really gritty "trench" warfare aspect of gundam. (though Shiro's RX-79 Extra Zero 8 was pretty cool too....And the fight between said MS and Norris's MS-07B3 Gouf is incredible)
