Are you refering to full metal panic fumuffo? or is there a new FMP? Or is this just a different anime that has nothing to do with FMP? I enjoyed FMP quite a bit and am very interested.RathNatakaru wrote:Full Metal Alchimest*
Back in 2000, I had this urge to just buy some anime, even though I wasnt really a huge anime fan at the time. So I went to a Soundtrack and bought my very first 2 animes. Guess what I bought? Sword for Truth AND X/1999. Ouch.ryuu_hime13 wrote:If you want more info on X look up X/1999. Make sure it's the TV series you're looking at and not the movie, though...yes, there is a movie, and I heard it was absolutely horrible. I haven't seen it. The series is great...though I've only seen up to volume 4. SUBARU SUMERAGI ROCKS!!!!!!
Looking back, I can't believe that didnt scare me away from anime forever, I mean, we're talking two of the very worst animes of all time here (go to any anime review site, like say animeacademy.com if you don't believe me)! Why do I bring this up? To emphasive the utter awefulness of the X movie. It came out 5 years before the TV series, is directed by Rintaro, the japanese equivalent to Michael Bay, a brilliant visual director but a retarded adapter who writes aweful scripts and storyboards. The movie looks great but has bad sound (it sounds like they recorded it in a closet, and an amazingly rushed plot. No time for character development, and no time to explain the already bizarre plot.
Rintaro also directed Metropolis, a terrible film but much better than X. He has done lots of work for Madhouse, and his best work is Mediocre. He was even involved with the Ultra dreaded Reign the Conqueror!
Ok, in case you dont get it, avoid the movie like the plague. It sumarizes (with some bad changes and stupid omisions) the entire plot of the X/1999 manga. By comparison The Manga is much more closely followed in the TV series. The Movie has only 3 merits.
1.) Gorgeous animation and some legit flair (Rintaro's only strength)
2. It makes the series seem so much better if you see the movie first, the movie ommitted what I think are the best parts of the series and seeing the Movie makes these good parts "a surprise" in the TV series.
3.) The movie, Manga and TV series have 3 different endings. The Movie ending is the dumbest, but still interesting if you are really into the series and saw the TV ending first.
Ryuu_hime mentioned Subura Sumeragi. I'm a guy and this was my favorite character as well. He's so everyman and goes through SO MUCH. All you see of him is in the first minute of the movie, and he doesnt even anounce his name. His character RUNS the TV-series IMO, with his sister (Makoto?)/ and Seishiro playing very strong roles as well, sometimes from beyond the grave.
These three characters were involved in a much older clamp anime called "Tokyo Babylon" and X-tv is literally a continuation/spin off of that anime/manga (Much like Frasier is to Cheers). His battles with Seishiro are not only eye candy (they're both sorcerers of sorts) but they have the most emotional impact since these two were once as close as brothers, and still kind of are, even though Seishiro (the wise yet mysteriously evil one) inexplicably kills Makoto (theres a reason) in the very first episode (Seishiro and Matoko were practically BF/GF in Tokyo Babylon, which makes episode 0 almost shakesperean. Normally I wouldnt give away such information but it happens in the first episode (episode 0).
Thats just one storyline arc. There are about 18 characters total in the anime, and the TV series does a good job of fleshing out both the good and the bad guys for the most part. After the Seishiro/Sumeragi Story arc, I think the Military buff guy and the high school girl (too many characters to remember all the names) have the most amazing story. In the movie, the ex military earth user KILLS the sweet innocent girl, rather brutally I might add (admitably one of the movies many sad moments). In the series, well, lets just say thing turn out different. WAY DIFFERENT!
I think X deserves more credit than it gets, and its touted as Clamp's (Cardcaptors/Angelic Layer/Magic Knight RayEarth) biggest success, the Manga that really put them on the map.
For both of you, I would definitely recommend trying to get a hold of "Tokyo Babylon" one way or another, then watch X tv. Be patient with X-tv, its a little slow paced and very dark/strange. If you really love the show when its over, then try watching the X movie (for its alternative (and inferior, but still alternative) story arcs, and different ending).
