Berserk - (It's like Lodoss...only on steroids (...OK, maybe not exactly...))

no ... steroids alone is a bit of an understatment. Crack and steroids combined ... ok.

Berserk = Uber gory story driven anime. COnsidering the amount of violence in that show and the quality it managed to maintain, i think it's a great series. Plus the dub out takes are amazingly halarious.
