I seem to in the minority here but I first got into anime when a student showed the first episode of eva in my english class (don't ask me how he covinced the teacher.) I had watched stuff before that but I wasn't seeking it out. After I bumed the tapes of my friend and watched the whole series I started looking for similar stuff finding Lain and Blue sub no 6 (notice a pattern?) After that I was hooked

The first anime I ever saw were the Superbook and Flying House bible story videos that my church had. Sitting on a shelf next to budgetless preschooler cartoon and 70s Hana Barberra rejects, those things looked VERY impressive. That said, I didn't encounter "serious" (meaning, non-kiddie) anime until Sci-Fi aired Robot Carnival, still one of my favorite animes of all time. Of course, shortly after that grand awakening to the potentials of anime, Sci-Fi abandoned anime, and our cable provider was the only one in Georgia that DIDN'T have Cartoon Network, and then we moved to where there was no cable at all, so I wasn't able to dive headfirst into serious anime fandom until Fox Kids started showing Digimon.
