I was thinking something similar. Characters in anime, especially young ones, rarely appear their supposed ages.
but then sometimes thats the case in real life aswell.

Yes this is a good point,. I've seen it many times. When I was in college, a roommate of mine met a cute girl at a local highschool football game and started going out with her. He was shocked later when he found she was a 14 year old freshman, I'd have sworn she was a senior, wow was she built. Then, in college, when I was dating my girlfreind (now wife), we went to a movie and they gave me a childrens ticket for her. Must have thought she was my sister. Looks don't always give away age.

As for finding young people atractive, it is in our biological programing. The features used in anime, such as large eyes, are the features found in the very young. Science has tested this, young animals and people share many basic traits, we are programmed to think they are cute, it triggers a protective parental instinct. Wait till you get my age, sex isn't the first thing on your mind, you can apreciate beauty in this world without it being clouded by hormones.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Heh, well stated. I see girls every day that have to deal with looking older than they actually are. Since the girls generally begin to develop sooner than the boys, they soon learn of the awsome and planet destroying power they have over the opposite sex. As you point out, we are programmed to notice this.

I have my own personal theories on why some guys don't *switch over* to the protective parental instinct as they get older, but that's another conversation.

The girls of Evengelion, while not exactly representative of the 'average' 14 year old are not entire unrealisic.

And viceversa madbunny. If I didn't have some notable female atributes people would think I'm 16. Heck some did, at least before they did, damn baby face. But there is some consolation:
I do look older know and by the time I'm 30 I'll look 25 and snatch me a 20 year old.
