why do you have to be a save the trees hippie to appreciate Monomoke?

Anyway stop necroposting you're dragging all of these threads back up and it's confusing me. I haven't done that in oh a good month, I'm very proud.

Gatsthedarksword wrote:ehh, if you ask me i thought there is actually very little to say about princess mononoke. i didn't like the story that great and the american celebrity voices kinda turned me off. but while the characters were good and it had a decent begining, but as it got more into it and more complex it became pretty stupid and not that great, it was too... well too all over the place, people began with lots of personal predujices and problems with everything, then they were able to put them aside and do amazing things for a short while but no one could drop them, they all ended up back as they were before and couldn't acomplish jack, they got so caught up in thier personal greivences that they ended the world just about. anyway the whole thing aside from the very begining just got to bothering me and didn't stop until i turned it ended

Finally someone who agrees!
I though Princess Monoke was way too overpublisized(kind of like Jimmy Nutron). Everyone was saying how it's the "best anime ever" and I thought it wasn't that great. The dub was great, the DVD itself was pretty good, but the story just kind of went downhill.

as Gatsthedarksword has said, the cracters start out with all kinds of predujices, but by some magical force, everyone gets along in the end and it's happily ever after. Yuck. The story was great witht he gods and everything, but the ending was almost as bad as Revolutionary Girl Utnea: The movie's.

This brings up another point. "Akira" was very overpublisized as well. Most of my friends kept falling asleep before the ending, I was fighting it too. Again, a great idea, but poorly carried out, IMO.

I dont buy into hype, but I still found Mononoke to the best anime out there. It basically takes the best elements of anime itself and wraps it all up into one absolutely amazing movie. The settings, the animation, the mystery, the legend, the culture, historical reference, the character design, it all just blows you away. If it doesnt blow you away then obviously you arent a fan of miyazaki style. Not that thats bad or anything, but Im interested to know what you DO find to be the best.

What I find the best? I haven't found one. I'd guess right now it'd be X/1999, but I haven't seen enough anime to even really decide what's the third best. In fact, come to think of it, I really don't think you we should compare anime as it being the 'best' anime or the 'worst' anime. Unless, of course, you get an original anime, and remake it. Because different directors/artists/creators of anime have different ways of doing stuff. You couldn't compare Akira to Princess Monoke because they're not even in the same genre. Nor could you compare VHD:Bloodlust to Earthian because those are almost seperate worlds.

I didn't mean for it to come off that I thought Princess Monoke as a whole was bad, I just didn't like how it ended. It was almost like the Utena movie, as if the deadline for the movie was coming up, so they did it the quickest and cheapest way they could.

The Forest Spirit didn't take away the man character's curse on his body the first time, why'd he take it away when he died?

San hated the main character, but they magically fell in love in the end.

The main character hated the stuff about the fortress and the trees being chopped down all the time for coal or whatever metal it was, yet he ends up living there in the end.

by best, I mean my personal favorite.

the forest spirit took away the curse I believe because Ashitaka proved that he was not trying to harm the forest, and risked his life to save San and return the head. before that when he had the wound, his intentions were still unknown, but he wasnt percieved as a threat by the forest god and maybe it saw potential good in him enough to cure his fatal wounding

Probably because he proved himself to be on the forest's side too...but you can kind of tell her hatred for him started to wear away a long time before the end

That one is harder to explain. My thought on that is that Ashitaka is still a human, and serves possibly as the proverbial scapegoat in the movie, and being neutral, he can side with either way. however, he probably wouldnt fit well in the forest with San, because she is essentially possessed by forest wolf gods and is no longer purely human. He still is, and so I figure he went to live in Irontown to keep the peace.
