First of all, I am proud to be an amv maker. It got me on my path to the film university and it made my life so much better because it's way more than a "hobby" for me.Kevmaster wrote:Why hiding it? O.o It's not like it's something bad...If I'd take drugs or be an alocoholic..or if I'd watch horse porn, then I'd probably hide it, but it's not like being an anime-fan is a crime.
It's not like I go around shouting "look at me, i watch anime, kiss meeehh or kick meeeh because u don't agree but i don't care anyway bla-bla-bla and bla!!!!"
Anyway, to get back to the awesome stuff called anime, amvs, mangaz, hentai, yaoi, wtv else u can come up with, it's not a "bad" thing to watch/read these. It's just like any other show. If it comes up in a discussion, someone saying "that's my hobby, i like gardening" or "i watch tv shows" or even "i make rpgs" and who knows what else, then i will also say about my "hobby" or even if there's just a lack of a subject to talk about. I ask if they've heard of anime or anything like it.
If they don't like it, fine by me. If they're curious about it and want to watch it, then i'm glad cause i just made another anime fan to go around shouting "omg i love anime" Okay, enough babbling.
So, it's not bad to look at anime or make amvs. Why be ashamed of something you love? Would you be ashamed of watching a tv show about kids at the age of 20-30 as u watch anime? Or about gardening? Or about reading some magazines? No, i don't think so. Like someone here said, you can choose to have friends who understand you even if they disagree, not people who say "that's stupid so you are too. what are you, like 2 years old?"
Anyway, people around me, which i chose based on their character and ability to think, mostly, are able to understand and give arguments pro or against something without calling me an idiot or talk behind my back "gah, she's a moron for watching/doing something like that at her age".
My family supports me on the way to become a video editor and they also like watching amvs. (Mom actually made a few requests but I only had time to complete one) She even watches the good pro vids here on a-m-v.org so what more can i ask for?
REAL friends will understand you and your family just has to know what it means to you. You don't have to tell everyone about what you do, just if you want to. But believe me, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Once you learn someone is also an anime freak/fan/whatever only then are you allowed to acknowledge that anime is cool.
Please learn to follow the don't ask don't tell policy like the Japanese do. While many people in the USA won't know wtf you are talking about if you bring up anime there is always the chance that they do know something or have a Japanese friend and will then brand you a complete fucking loser.
Mind you if you are under the age of 16 and watching Naruto it's OK. And it might be OK for someone in their 20s in Japan to continue reading Jump but I doubt you will see them bragging about it. So I would make certain to not discuss children's manga once you are in your 20s since that kind of brands you almost as bad as some comic book freak. It would be advisable to talk about esoteric/auteur anime like Angel's Egg, Mind Game, or some Studio 4C shorts.
Those who have graduated to higher plains like Pas will probably acknowledge that it's OK for one to discuss online ero manga like that tankoubon of Hanaharu Naruko's Shoujo Material you just imported and luckily made it through customs without notice. I would caution that one should still be careful about discussing Bible Black on your Facebook.
P.S. WTF was this thread about?

Proud to be a freak, as it usually sets me apart from all the sheep of society that I suuuuure don't want to be mistaken for.Moonie wrote:Sukunai wrote:I'm a freak
Although I usually prefer the term "individual", but I can settle for freak as I know people like myself usually make the sheep nervous.
Hehe, I even don't give a damn about the inevitable sheep based jokes that will result from this post. Hey, whatever you cowards need to make yourselves feel better eh.
"P.S. WTF was this thread about?"
Not 100% sure, but as I think it might be sort of age based relevant.
Younger people tend to fret more so over the image of themselves from their peers than people old enough to know that peer pressure is just that, peer pressure.

Thats the way i feel about it.
I never felt ashamed about watching anime or making AMVs.
All of the people that nkow me, know about what im into and are cool about it
and i wouldn't care if someone made fun of me about liking it.
Being an anime fan just feels normal to me. I've been one since I was a kid.
I'd never hide all my anime stuff from people but i would put them out of reach when my nephews come.
Don't want ripped inserts and finger prints all over my dvds >.>

Well yeah, it's one thing to not let them on your desk so your little nephews can't break/scratch/make fingerprints on them and another to hide them because ur ashamed. Your reason is logic ^^Moonie wrote:Thats the way i feel about it.annyaonweb wrote: First of all....... (insert huge post here)
