Technically, I guess it was this kids' movie I saw years and years ago, which I just thought was a really weird movie. It was about two pet chipmunks who run off to the forests to see the wild chipmunks. The only other things I remember were that the main chipmunk wore a little neckerchief [sp?], and the other chipmunk (the girl) was named Nono. Oh, and the pigeon in the beginning that inspired this chipmunk to run off had really, really bad dub-to-mouth sync.
I have no idea what that was.
Then in high school I saw a short which I think was anime, as part of the MTV show "Liquid Television" - I think it was called The Running Man. It was about a suicidal race-car driver or something like that, and was narrated by a reporter. That was the first time I'd seen something in animation that made me think "Wow, this is really cool."
The first anime I saw and KNEW was anime was Vampire Hunter D. A friend of mine brought it over for a vampire movie fest (we watched that, the original Dracula, and Interview with a Vampire).
And then Saturday Anime on Sci-Fi and the rest.
