Because I played it first
FFVIII was my favorite Final Fantasy because it was the first Playstation game I ever owned and the first RPG I ever played. FFVI would be its only rival right now, though I hear FFXI kicks ass and, hopefully, will find out in a few days.
Favorite Character:
Villain - Sephiroth, duh
Character - Lets see, not from 9, 10, or anything less than 6, so that narrows it down to Cloud, Red XIII, Vincent, Squall, Irvine, Rinoa, Locke, Celes, Umaro, Gogo(you know you love him), Edgar, and Mog.
Pimp - Irvine/Zidane/Mog/Gogo<-(Just had to put him in)

Favorite FF character overall = Cloud...he's just that cool!
Favorite FF - Tie between 6/3 and 7 (Their stories were the best of any RPG I've ever played!)
Most hated = Squall (I hate to say this, but his inner turmoil stuff was way too whiny!) and the character that ate frogs w/ the big tongue and the fork...it was just soooo dumb lookin'!

FF was fun, and could complete in a day or two, got a bit repetative but if you spent some time powering up at the begining you stayed about 2 levels higher than most enemies trhough out the game.
FF2 had the moist anoying level up system ever, especially for health and magic. Yes the storyline was a huge imporvement over FF but the level up system destoyed the game in my eyes.
FF6 had the really cool job system. and was a very well balanced game.
FF7 had the best story line and villian ever. Proberly has the most emotional plot twist with the death of Areis, of all the games.
FF8 had gunblades, the second worst ever magic system in the FF series, and vertually no character development. And Ultimecia went through what 3 evolutions in the final battle. Unless you overloaded youre characters with GF's and horded your magic most thigs were difficult. GF's were way to easy to miss, especially Doom train. Took me ages to find the right parts to upgrade evryones weapons.
FF9 had a well rounded group of characters (shame about Quina) And i really liked the balance of skills, magic, summoning and items. proberly my all time favourite. Especially the chocobo side quests were a lot more straight forward, and rewarding enough to continue them.
FFX had the best summoning system and a new way to level up, but really anoying and whiney voices.
Have yet to finish playing FF3, and have 4 and 5 to go. Emulators are a wonderful thing.

FFVI
FFVI didn't have a Job System, that was FFV. FFVI was the first to take the individuality of characters and really run with it (I'm not counting FFVI because it was really boring for me).
Hey Barnaby, you might want to put a SPOILER warning on your FFVII segment. I agree with everyone Quina sucked.
PS. What gender was it?

Hmmm...I'm guessing Quina was female...
The Sephiroth thing was the key factor that motivated me to finish the game, though...revenge!
My favorite FF6 character was either Edgar or Sabin...Edgar was always lovin' the ladies, and Sabin dealt the pain! Ah, good times...kinda makes me wanna play the game again!
