The problem lies in the fact that American entertainment is selling to a foreign market. America relies pretty heavily on trade with other countries, so films and television shows are built to be universal.
Humor and philosophy don't really translate very well, so they just put in lots and lots of sex and violence. Everybody can understand that.
Anime, however, doesn't. It generally has deeper plots or greater meanings (Unless you are watching shows made for fan-service geeks) then the average American show.
As for cartoons, they try to be funny, But are absolutely not. I miss the days of freakazoid :(
Anime usually has much more to offer. But you do get the occasional good thing out of the US. But that is rare nowadays.

I agree with those who prefer anime
I have always loved good artistic talent, and whoa. Anime is full of it. Also, ever since I was a child, I have loved cartoons. Most of the Western cartoons for college students and beyond(and all TV for that matter, cept history channel and Discovery etc) is full of mindless, gender biased, perverted shows. I know anime can be the same, but it is really refreshing to think as I watch. I am so happy anime grows with me. So I can watch it foreeeeeeever. Besides, I was never able to pick a western text thoughtful enough for my modern gothic text essay. Soooooo anime won once again. I have to research more about Japan. (I have a stack of like 12 books to read for that report.) AHHHHH. Ya'll have a great day.
