Hm. This is hard.

I've only seen two episodes of Lain, but damn. That's pretty messed up shiz.

Also, Juri from Utena has some pretty weird emotional conflicts going on.

UHM. I guess ... just about everyone from Evangelion needs some prozac.

You can't get more messed up than Lucy from Elfen Lied. She is one cold, homicidal pyscho. People like her in real life usually end up in strait-jackets for most of their lives, or in jail, or dead for that matter.

I believe it was Muraki from Descendants of Darkness. His plan at towards the end of the series is to clone a dead man (who he completely hates) and kill him with his own hands.

What's the point of going to the trouble of bringing a man back to life and killing him when he's already dead?

Kenshin has my vote as well. His horrible life messed him up but he didn't use that against himself, he used it to change into a person that everybody loved.
