God I hated that. Every once in a while I see the cover at the video store, with his stupid football helmet thingy and for just a brief second it looks interesting.. until the buried memories surface and the screams warn everyone away. Fist of the Northstar was better than that.

They had this on the shelf at the 2020 in the anime section for the longest time. Eventually I said "Hmm, cool monsters, this might be fun" lets just say that it wasn't my thing.

Ah, just wanted to say I agree completely. ^_^ I watch that anime namely for his character (and Mirai Trunks) and I find it hilarious. I think the funniest episode is either the one you mentioned or the one with the 'worms' inside Buu's stomach and Vegeta's adverse reaction to them. One thing I can say for dbz, aside from the action it has some of the funniest *non-slapstick* humor I've seen in anime - you just have to like the characters to appreciate it.Trident wrote:I think it's time for someone to stand up for DBZ: it rocks. Subbed, at least--after watching one ep on Cartoon Network I think my brain started bleeding. There's so much lost when the voice actors change. But I dunno... I tend to be a bit more violent than most females and many males which I know. I'm probably the only girl in existence to find DBZ "cute." (I mean, come on--Vegeta is forced into wearing a pink shirt once... PINK... how can you beat that for traumatizing a character?)
And on that note, I don't hate DBGT completely - I have to give them props for putting Trunks in a dress. But it's still too cute for me (I prefer Z over the original season as well - too oriented to the young lighthearted viewer). I like the mix of humor and angst better than just cutsy things.
More anime I dislike (hate is a little too strong for these):
Goldenboy (no thanks)
Boku no Sexal Harrassment (don't ask)
Pilot Candidate (great idea, don't like the girls)
Rurouni Kenshin: Christian Saga (mostly just this saga)
Digimon (the newest series, not the first 2 seasons)
Pokemon (I've only watched it with my 2yr old niece, but the first movie was good)
And basically everything I listed in the 'Sucky Anime' thread.

Yeah... Kenshin was among the first series I saw all the way through. From what I've heard, it diverges from the manga after the Kyoto arc--pretty much everything after that deserves a "what the heck?" reaction. Though if the Christian arc is the one I'm thinking of, I kinda liked it, mainly because of the whole "Sanosuke meets girl" thing. I'm a Sano fan. I thought it was cute. My problems with that arc were more theological.

Oh yeah... I keep forgetting to add Magic Knights Rayearth to the list too. The eps are completely formulaic and predictable with little to no character development. I haven't finished the series yet (I've made it through ep 22 or so), but they don't get particularly interesting until about ep 19 (aka that's when they start getting unpredictable). I mean, granted, DBZ is formulaic. But... I don't know... in DBZ there's progression, whereas in Rayearth they keep going back to what happened in the previous ep, only featuring a different one of the knights and a different enemy:
Magic Knight (usually Hikaru): "We're best friends! We're gonna get back to Tokyo together!"
Enemy: either "Graar! I'm a monster!" or "Graar! I'm a bad guy hired by Zagato!"
Clef: "I'm not dead yet! Will yourself to victory!"
Magic Knight: "Clef! Don't stop talking to me, regardless of the fact that you have been turned into a stone creature!" and then (in first case) "I kill you!" or (in second case) "You shouldn't be bad! Let's be friends!"
Enemy: (in first case) "Splat. I am dead." or (in second case) "Okay! I won't fight you any more!"
Magic Knight: "Yay! We're best friends!"

That's why the OVA version is SOOOOOOO much better.Trident wrote:Oh yeah... I keep forgetting to add Magic Knights Rayearth to the list too. No, I realize that. I'm not saying you're supposed to like everything.SarahtheBoring wrote:Just because we are "anime fans" doesn't mean that we have to love EVERY anime ever made.Otohiko wrote:Jeebus!
You know what?
I really hate hate threads more than anything.
Really. They make me sick. If you guys are supposed to be anime fans, I wonder what the haters are like...
It's not that I'm against you stating opinions, but hey - I think these things are pretty divisive and often pretty bitter.
True, I dislike irrational hatred, but what I dislike more is the "You're not a TRUE FAN if you don't think that every cel ever painted is SACRED" mindset.
I'm under no obligation to like anything. If I have to like everything to be a "fan," then I'm not a fan.
It's just that, it's not a very sensible thing to do in a public forum where, chances are, there will be people who value things that others may hate.
I'm also saying this because I was almost scared away from a favorite music artist of mine by once going on a forum and reading pissed, angry, irrational posts from those who were supposedly the fans.
This is really in poor taste. Although, I must acknowledge that, well, at least the creators of this thread were kind enough to let those offended stay away.
I'm still among the people who think that these sorts of 'hatehatehate' discussions are irrational. Because, well, my understanding is that rational people would be rational enough to keep their dislikes to themselves.
