Also I'm assuming the reason why people prefer Spike more than Vash is because of his character and charm. Those two traits can go a long way. By sinning and chosing not to admit truthfully that you were wrong you separate yourself from God. You choose to be away from him. So you're the one who is actually choosing to go to Hell, God is not sending you there. Or at least in accordance to the Catholic Church.
