Is that the set which only has the first 19 episodes? (cause that's the only one I've been able to find selling...*curses US distributors' fears of licensing anything old*)supersayian313 wrote:both series are works of art. i watched eva first, twice. i was a huge fan ever since. then i saw rahxephon on anime network, i got the boxed set and movie. i watched the series several times, i was hooked after watching 1 or 2 episodes. i agree that in evangelion you have to watch the 2 movies to really understand the ending, but with rahxephon, the series ends and it all makes sense. then when you watch the movie, the story gets even better.
i just bought the space runaway ideon boxed set, but i haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
Ah well...it's being subbed, so it's getting there

i found it on ebay. you are talking about ideon right? i startred watching the series last night. it is 3 dvds. so far im still on the first one and ive watched 6 or 7 episodes. so im pretty sure it is the completed series. the back of the dvds are in japenese so i cant read it. i can see some minor similarities to evangelion, but it reminds me of a few other shows ive seen too. i can tell the creator went on to make the gundam series.

Evangelion set the stage for so many other shows to copy it's formula that it's not even funny. I thought that the concepts were interesting and full of promise. The characters all seem to hold up under light scrutiny in terms on self consistent motivation and generally f-ed up situations. Most of the chicks in Eva are generally better looking. Unfortunately Eva has Shinji. Shinji, and similar characters always piss me off. I fuckin' hate seeing characters like that; "hey, I'm surrounded by hot, possibly willing chicks, I'm now an elite pilot and I get to battle in massive and awesome mecha, but I don't waaaaaana! I didn't ask for this!".
It's like that show Gantz. If you find yourself dead, in a room full of guns and super-suits you gear up and get hunting.
RahXephon to me has some better characters, and internally consistent reactions. Especially with the Haruka character, if you rewatch the show you'll see her cringing and hurt reactions that make little sense the first time around (unless you'd figured it out)for example. I found the artwork and animation to be better, but lets not forget just how old Evangelion is... for it to even be able to be compared to a big modern production like RahXephon is pretty impressive.
I also found that the ending on RahXephon was more satisfying to me.... well the coda was anyway. The ending to Eva was... meh.
RahXephon wins.

shinji, was called by his dad to piliot an eva. gendo abanded shinji in the past leaving him to fend for himself. The father replies "I have a use for you now." Now most of the time shinji has felt great pain in the eva and he just wanted to run away from it all but has grown attached to other charcters such as rei and asuka where he wanted to save them in desprite situations like in ep19 where he vovowed never to piloit the eva again.
He has suffered great emotional damage. And overall suffereing.
Im sure if you had a childhood like his and you went through all that stuff you would do the same .
And the ending... I think you should watch the movies to find out who the actual winner is. They put the ending like that on purpose so people would go to see the movies to understand it.
Its not like a series like cowboy bebop where the movies had nothing really to do with the show itself or the ending.

If it's Ebay and only 3 discs, then it's prob. the 1-19 set. (the series itself was 39 eps, plus the two movies.)supersayian313 wrote:i found it on ebay. you are talking about ideon right? i startred watching the series last night. it is 3 dvds. so far im still on the first one and ive watched 6 or 7 episodes. so im pretty sure it is the completed series. the back of the dvds are in japenese so i cant read it. i can see some minor similarities to evangelion, but it reminds me of a few other shows ive seen too. i can tell the creator went on to make the gundam series.
You should start seeing more EVA similarities around...ep 13 or so (precursor to berserker mode for one)
That said, early in the series, the similarities are minimal (most notably in the characters...the two biggest comparisons of choice being Sheryl to Ritsuko and Kasha to Asuka)
p.s. Actually, Tomino did Gundam first. Ideon, along with Dunbine, was one of his two attempts to break away from Gundam. The two shows were successful...but not successful enough to keep him from returning to Gundam

I don't get how can you guys compare...
They are both very good shows, and yes they have some similarities... but all shows have a similarities.
You can compare Rahxephon to Gundam seed...
I like them both. But just for the fact that I watched evangelion first, I like Eva better.
I don't think Evangelion music is bleh. The opening song is way better. The end of evangelion bg music is totally awsome and is touching.
