I - This thread is further pointless because

II - I've got the confirmation I've been seeking. It's now official - Serpico is dodging healthy argument, thus proving himself (as it stands for now) entirely incapable of upkeeping any unhealthy discussion. Note the skill with which he quickly avoids all the comments others have been providing and moves right on to pocky sticks! Ah!

bliss and utmost tastiness

Please stop being an ass. It isn't helping.

Remember where the term "Otaku" originated from. It's an insult derived
from the religious group responsible for the Tokyo Subway gass attack
in 1995. So if you want to refer to yourself by that term go right ahead,
but remember that it was never meant as an expression of elitism or
greatness.

I knew about the origins of "Otaku"
http://msw.mcmaster.ca/~osamu/anime.html
otaku (oh-tah-koo)
n. 1. Slang for a hard-core anime and/or manga fan! 2. Anyone with an obsessive hobby, eg. a motorhead would be a car otaku. 3. A fanatic or weirdo. In Japan this has connotations very much like "geek". Animecca Magazine has done an interesting write up about this word and its meanings. [lit.: "your house", "you". possible orig.: otaku never go outside]
But being Otaku isn't something to be ashamed of, so we like anime and are proud of it, so what! Just about anything can be used as a derogatory word towards anyone else. I don't care.

I am Otaku and I love to cosplay. So there :P
Who needs reality? Anime is much more fun!!

Personally, I don't take offense to being called Otaku either. It's a group that's diverse and flexible enough to fit my personality, so why not? In terms of "obsessed fan" - well, there are areas other than anime where you could call my behavior otaku-ish.

But my Otaku-ish behavior is mostly limited to knowing way too much about certain things. I don't cosplay. Some people do. I think this is a great aspect of otakuism - there's lots of otaku-specific things you can do, but you don't really have to if you don't feel like it. All you really have to do to be considered otaku is like anime. Which, to me, other than going to cons, is the only thing which identifies me as otaku.
