Heh, I like the rivals, too. But I also like the anime where the guys are very close and get along well. In many cases the guys are so close that without the girls around I don't think it would be much of a stretch to imagine a real pairing taking place. Others it would probably never happen without a great deal of persuasion in fanfic form. ^_^;;
But I like to play with anime - I just get bored easily if I'm limited to only liking what's officially in the anime. You can watch it, but that's it - no addition, no delving into what could be hidden between episoes - you can only like what's on the screen. I dislike that on principle.
So as a shonen ai fan, my way of playing with an anime (making it more than something I watch and never think about again because everything is there on the screen) is to take the characters and play with *them* - this may be making 'non-yaoi' anime characters interract in a shonen ai relationship, or it may be a parody in which I focus only on the guys and their often humorous relationships. Either way, I hold no anime sacred. If I can't play with it (do things not included in the original) there isn't much reason for me to watch it aside from the innitial interest in seeing what it shows onscreen.
