site doesn't accept/support piracy... AMVs are made by copying footage from an animated and COPYRIGHTED series/movie... hence the irony.
but of course the difference is that if you post how to download an episode, you're supporting actual piracy of taking the actual copyrighted material in it's original or translated form... AMVs are NOT (usually) made by the same people that created the original show, so these editors are taking material and spreading it, BUT it's in the EDITOR's own creative form, it becomes a different product, therefore the site DOES support AMVs.
..it's hard to explain, but i think that's the jist of it, i'm sure someone will post to add or correct anything i've said, so just be patient

Out There and Loving It
Well no disrespect, but you missed the point completely. Granted I could have written most of that post better. (Give me a break I was new to the forum.)kearlywi wrote:Quote:I mean no disrespect, but think about what is being said right here. You (or whoever) is literally saying that most people become a cog in the machine, in other words, a part of the machine (because a cog IS a part of the machine). Most people become a cog in the machine of society, but Naota transends the mass by becoming part of a machine
It is situational irony. Naota transcends people who live their lives within a pre-prescribed box, like machine parts that run society. He does this by becoming part of a machine.
I didn't say people that don't understand it could not like it. Some people like a spaz hour. Its just that most with the philosophical understanding to have a more complete comprehension would typically be 'out there' enough to appreciate it.kearlywi wrote:As far as your comments about Not liking FLCL equating to not understanding it, I would have to agree, but then again, I understand the show better than my friends do, and they love the show.
There are a lot of symbols that relate to religion and philosophy. It takes a knowledge base of a strange variety to watch the show. The artistic dynamics play a large part as well. Its like Robin Williams comedy its hilarious if you know the references he makes. In the case of FLCL its hilarious anyway, but has depth comes with understanding the references. FLCL is made by GAINAX. Trust me there is nothing random about it. Try Evangelion.kearlywi wrote:FLCL had a lot of things that looked symbolic, but were really just fun nonsense, or to put it more technically, wacky expressionist elements (expressionism means images that are powerful and even suggestive but have no concrete meanings, and sometimes no intended meanings).
People put way to much feeling into more traditional art. I agree sometimes no point exist, but FLCL always has a point even if it was done subconsciously. Like I said its made by GAINAX. Art critics are bullshiters and leeches that should go find a hobby of their own. I analyze things to learn as an artistic person, because I have many artistic ventures myself.kearlywi wrote:One of my friends at Colorado State University is a gifted artist. His drawings look as if they came from a very well drawn american comic book, so when I first saw them, I assumed he had paid a famous comic book artist to draw them for him. His pictures are very beautiful, are very detailed, and are unusual in nature. One of his drawings was a Mayan Warrior riding a tiger on the great african plains, details such as the tall grasses and setting sun were very beautiful and really set the atmosphere for the image. We talked at length about his drawings once, and he mentioned whenever people saw his drawings, they would interpret them. Some might guess that the named image was a representation of him being a black man living in America who happened to like asian things (i.e. anime). Most other interpretations were much deeper than the simple short example I just gave. So I asked him: "What is the real meaning of your drawings?" He said; "There is no meaning. I saw this beautiful image and I had to draw it."
As for American comics, I can't stand them. Sorry, but cheap newspaper made in Canada held together with a staple isn't my idea of fun reading. Not to mention American comics are often not planned and drug out in order to capitalize on the fan base. Manga relies more on the art itself and avoids the crappy soap opera dialogue that pollutes American comics. Manga also often has at least a general idea of story progression from start to finish before hand. There are plenty of Manga that are exceptions to this, but not the majority like comics. Plus the coloring of American comics is done darkly to save in the printing process and make illustration quicker with a lack of details. (Though the latter is only sometimes true.)
Sorry again pal, but I read interviews and quite a few artists guides for manga. The guy’s ideas were initially out shear odd ball creativity, but refinement to greatness is a process of thought. Many manga artists are typically trying to seriously express an idea. Take the robot sprouting from the Noata's head. He said something to the effect that it represents the ideas that flow from his mind. See initial creativity followed by refinement into workable part of the story.I suspect that this is what happened to the creator of FLCL, except on a much grander scale. He might have had a dream, did some crack, who knows, but this anime probably raced into his head, and he found it so beautiful that he had to recreate it. I really doubt this guy structured all this madness in a brainstorming session, it had to have been inspired, it just oozes with creativity, and creativity is a muse. The details are probably all just reflections of his personality or his creative mind.
A hit and a miss. Once again the interviews. Manga is very thorough. Try not to think of it in terms of western civilization. Jump the culture gap.If there is any message its probably coincidental. What do we gain from defying the norms of society? Is it good or bad? (I'd say bad cause I wouldnt want to go through what Naota went through). Adolescence, Explicit Content, Art, and rebellion are not sub-plots. They are just what they are, expressionist elements. Elements that the creator used to make his tale more colorful.
Anyway bad things and pain are good things in disguise. Life would be miserablely boring without misery. Yes a paradox, but a valid point. Naota drinks the sour drink at the end of one episode despite his dislike of the taste, because he misses Mamimi.
Soda represents a lot in FLCL.
The sour is Mamimi. Why sour, he could have easily disliked another taste?
Well, Mamimi is a little bitter (revenge near the end) and very depressing. (I really like her character myself.)
The pulp is Haruko. Fun and tasty (aka her kissing Naota), but rough around the edges (her beating up Naota).
There is more but you get the idea.
Question You Life:
If you don't question and test society life becomes a miserable tread down a singular predetermined path. Read the book Brave New World. It’s a philosophy thing. Without question you get the dark ages. Extremely orthodox religion takes over and life must be a set structure to rules that may not always apply or occasionally contradict. You get things like the jugany ritual (may be spelled wrong). That is where you are possessed by demons or what we now call chicken pox. So your loved ones kill you by drilling a whole in your head to release the demons to save your soul. Yeah folks this went on for almost 1000 years, because due to excommunication and superstition nobody said 'hey could this be a wrong' out loud. Of course on the other hand society can become a slave to science where emotion is eliminated in favor of logic. This eliminates the any purpose or joy in life because people are manufactured to serve an efficient function and die. People serve society instead of society serving people. This is contrary to the reason people create society in the first place, which is to make life efficient in order to enjoy it more. In both cases the people that question, the people of truly exceptional talent, are ostracized.
Once again. GAINAX espicially FLCL’s creator more or less does not do random. If this anime was being symbolic, it wouldn't be so murky and up for interpretation. I dont believe the anime is symbolic because there is no solid evidence, and more importantly, the anime does not require symbolism to accomplish its task, tell an incredibly insane story. The anime is off the charts crazy and for most anime fans, funny. Thats all it is. All the fun of an insane show with all the artistic weirdness of any peice of art, with a tendency for the inexplicable.
On to Others:
A good point generalhs. Well at first the pirate king has possession of the green robot making it red. Like Haruko he fights MM.generalhs wrote:kearlywi wrote: wrote:If you are willing to concede that for some reason the first robot fought for Earth (or more specifically Naota) even though he came through a portal that was sending robots to conquer earth, the rest of the robot fights make sense. However, why did the first robot defend Naota/human beings? Did it want to be a human being? Was it an angel and not a robot at all? I think I've put too much thought into this anime. I am willing to assume that for whatever reason, the first robot is a rogue for humans while the rest are appropriately trying to conquer earth. Therefore, if you allow that one detail to slide, the robot fights make sense.
I always thought he only helped them because his head was smashed, but the fact he fought his way out kind of negates my theory.
Yes, I'm one of those warped people who like this show. Then again, I also thoroughly enjoyed LAIN and I know a lot of people who loathe it.
Naota is stuck to him because the NO channel is imperfect. The robot may be out of Naota’s head, but the pirate king is not. Plus his shirt was stuck. When smashed the NO channel is slammed shut leaving half the pirate king in Naota and half in Kanchi. That is way he only manifests when Naota and Kanchi merge. Note that Naota's NO improves with each use and this was the first use.
First the robot comes from Medical Mechanica, but is possessed by the pirate king.Cloud Clone wrote:Is this a necro-post? Um, anyways, I'm a fan of FLCL and I didn't want to go through the whole thread reading stuff but I'm a fan of FLCL even though I didn't quite get it.
Where did the robot come?
What was the iron really supposed to be?
What made Nauta special from everyone else?
Why did his brother's (ex?) friend hang on him all the time?
Just a few questions.
Second the iron is a symbol with many meanings.
One is that irons press things i.e. oppression.
Another is the theme of 'keep your cool' and remain 'smooth.'
Naota is not special on the surface. The manga makes a point to show how he is not talented at sports, school, and does not have looks. However he has sympathy (Mamimi). He does not except the boring life he was dealt. You could say he says NO to it. He has the rare gift of NO which allows things to be pulled through space out of the wormhole in his head. That is pretty special.
Something to note is that rock rebels against society norms and excepted life. The pirate king has a sort of rock star implication and a ton of NO. The electric guitar is ironically a product of industrialization and manufactured society. However it is used to fight being given a prescribed destiny. Naota fights with the industrial product of a robot, thus he has NO.
Finally Mamimi has a huge crush on Naota in his own right. She also likes him as a substitute for his brother. That is where the nickname takkun comes from, as a combination involving his brother's name. Mamimi is also not right in the head (I like that about her.). She was traumatized when his brother left. She is the child of divorce as well. She is always at the bridge to be free of the hurt that others bring. Mamimi is also clingy and lonely. Naota and her stick together because they share the feeling of being left behind. The manga goes into her depression and love for Naota more, but be careful reading it could give you a brain aneurism (laugh).
Oh and FLCL is not random, check into the Director, Kazuy Tsurumaki, the rest of the staff, and other anime by GAINAX and you will see.
One More Thing:
You seem to get copyrights. I will see if I can further explain.Daio Kaji wrote:just in case someone else hasn't decided to move on..

If you draw a picture of Goku, it is okay so long as do not claim credit for the idea.
Things of common knowledge are up for grabs in most cases thus encyclopedia exist (they site somthings though).
Things that are around for a few 1000 years (I forget the exact knowledge) are considered world property. That is why no royalties are paid for orchestras to practice Mozart.
If a person takes credit for the original idea, misrepresents the company, or makes profit from what belongs to others it becomes a problem.
Napster made money off other's work. It got busted.
However Metallica was only mad because Napster stole an unfinished song. It takes impact out of revealing an art work if people already know about it. Larrs was in his car and heard the song that was not finished on the radio and traced it back to Napster. Metallica was upset that it was unfinished not that it was ripped off. I thought people should know that it was about art not money. (Yeah I am huge Metallica fan.)
Besides CD quality is better than bootleg. I'll continue to buy CDs and support those I like. Somebody has to fight the wave of techno pop music.
In some cases there are violations, but nobody including the copyright holders care.
Some of Nirvana's songs were like that. They actually sometimes said something like, this one is for you bootleggers because we don't feel like working in a studio right now, while in concert.
AMVs are an odd animal. There really isn’t much of any way for people to steal songs from AMVs. There is absolutely no hope of assembling an anime from AMVs. In a way it is kind of like advertisement created by music and anime fans. Someone may have a problem, but as you said it is sort of a new product all together, like buying flour and eggs to make a cake. I myself have bought music and anime due to AMVs. I plan to buy plenty more as well.
Blaaaa. Good analogy. I still think Coke and Pepsi taste nothing alike to include the vanilla coke and pepsi. Coke has most of the market by far. It is stronger, which suits the many caffeine driven people. Pepsi One hurt Pepsi bad too, even though New Coke was just as bad. Marketing utilized the failure of New Coke better. I miss Crystal Pepsi, which is mentioned in FLCL. In case your wondering (I doubt it) I like vanilla Pepsi. The more mellow taste of Pepsi does not drown out the taste of vanilla as much. If you don't want to taste the vanilla why buy a vanilla soda.Bryal wrote:i see what you mean, its like the way pepsi has pepsi vanilla and coke has vanilla coke, pepsi just changed the name infront and is no longer there copyright. but id figuer videos were differnt
In the case of hosting episodes I am torn. If you host a few episodes, likely at low quality for download purposes, it could inform people about the anime. There are plenty of awesome anime that are not on TV. Video rental places sometimes carry a very limited selection as well. Sometimes it is hard to know what to buy, especially from reviews and the back cover synopsis on the case. On the other hand if everyone hosts a favorite episode people may settle for a low quality version and not buy the series. This is a very bad thing. The more anime that sells the more will be exported from Japan. Plus the more will remain unaltered in the translation. This means more anime, no changed names, no lame curse word replacement, no omitting of scenes or episodes, and faster production of anime to other languages. So yeah hosting episodes is piracy, even if sometimes it may help to sell an anime. More often than not it is just plain piracy as I would think most people just download and never purchase.
Just remember you vote with your wallet, so I myself dislike piracy.
As for a few other's questions.
FLCL is short for Fooly Cooly.
Furi Kuri is Tokyo slang for being felt up. (Makes sense)
When Naota's dad dies it symbolizes rebirth. He was a perve, but matures through the series like Naota. In the end he gives Mamimi a job to take care of her.
Other things to note:
Hair Cut
Ninamori makes sometimes makes mean comments about Mamimi, but truly admires her free spirit. Ninamori has a life of responsibility as the Mayors daughter (note the USSR shirt, conformity) Later in the series she cuts her hair similar to Mamimi's and starts to hang around with Naota and his friends.
Ninamori is shown as much more of a girlfriend competition and a control freak in the Manga.
Could be. Maybe. Awful Suspicious.
The secretary has a similar look to Mamimi. Mamimi becomes Naota's Dad's photographer. His Dad publishes the scandal. Mamimi's parents are divorced. Hmmmm. A lot could be read into this. This is a point I am still working out.
Burn
Naota is the one that brought Mamimi the candles and lighters. People tend to miss that because of all the noise.
Double Meanings
There are lot but here is an example of what to look for. Eventually I plan to write out the script in order to write in comments and explain more things like this. I have to buy the rest of the series first though.
Naota says 'A stupid adult that doesn't know how to grow up' refering to Haruko.
Mamimi then says 'Does it hurt' refering both to Naota's head, but also to growing up.
Manga
Haruko’s superior is Haruko. It is a division of personality between emotion and logic. If you look at the previous part she points the gun at Mamimi. The same gun saves Naota. She travels through Mamimi’s NO to come out of Naota’s head. Mamimi was really depressed and confused at the time, which seems to increase a person’s NO channel. Haruko constantly pushes Naota over the edge in a similar fashion in order to improve the NO channel. Plus Haruko is nuts anyway.
Mamimi's Insight
She has an artistic insight. In a way Kanchi is a god of the black flame as he contains half of the pirate king and Naota the other half.
Kamon Insight
He often speaks for the artist. He also says the thing about lazy artist which is the one of the few unnecessary lines in FLCL. The other unnecessary parts are usually tributes to South Park. There are lot of South Park tributes, including a key chain on the teacher’s rearview mirror in the car the gets crushed. (This is Naota’s Dad if you don’t know.)
Masashi Insight
He gives small clues like 'not exactly' when talking about the Vespa bike. The bike is able to fly that is not exactly a normal Vespa. (He is the one in the purple vest.)
Amaro
Amaro tries to hard to conform to norms in order to attract women. Naota learns to like himself. He also learns to remain calm due to so many extremes. Naota unlike Amaro learns to keeps his cool. He gets the girls and the cool. (Kind of like a rock star....hmmm)
There is a lot more but I will wait until I do script comments. I have to buy the other DVDs first though. Plus this is getting to be a really long post. I think this furthers my first post a good bit.
I will have to write more later since this getting long. The more posts I read the more questions I see. I feel I must enlighten people to such an amazing work of art. Plus I am starting feel like I live on planet by myself when it comes to things like FLCL. Oh well.
If 6 episodes are not enough you need to watch more closely.
Man, I must be crazy to understand FLCL this much. Crazy is fun.
If you still think FLCL is crazy, random, and that I know nothing then check into the staff and GAINAX studio before you start on me. Interviews help, as does listening to the show without watching it, and reading the manga if you are ready for the manga at least.
For those with genuine questions ask away and hopefully I will remember to check the post and answer.

Actually, Tsurumaki-san says that the iron was originally picked just because it looked cool, and later they realized that they could make it a symbol as well by talking about how Medical Mechanica is trying to "iron out the wrinkles" in our brains. Not only are they razing planets, but they're also trying to make everything and everyone uniform, something that neither Amarao nor Haruko wants to see happen.HeavyMetal wrote:Second the iron is a symbol with many meanings.

Whatever
First I said it had many meanings. I just named a few. I do inject a little more meaning into the show than originally intended. There is subconscious overtone in most art.Scintilla wrote:Actually, Tsurumaki-san says that the iron was originally picked just because it looked cool, and later they realized that they could make it a symbol as well by talking about how Medical Mechanica is trying to "iron out the wrinkles" in our brains. I listed some of the more random parts like South Park. Remember art starts as creativity, but is refined by skill. Plus my post was getting long as there is a lot to FLCL so I don’t always put everything.Scintilla wrote:Also check out the director's commentary. The Manga has some different elements and I often include parts of it when considering FLCL.
If you look in the scenery his magazine announces a new photographer. The picture on Kamon's magazine is one taken by Mamimi. She does leave town. However photographers often travel. Mamimi also makes a comment early on about the amount of bread. Kamon is not as conservative as Naota’s grandfather. (His grandfather doesn’t like her.) Kamon isn’t really conservative at all for that matter. He tries to take care of her a little. Plus remember that Mamimi brought the pictures of Naota getting hit by the Vespa to Kamon.Scintilla wrote:WTH? Mamimi leaves town at the end. Mamimi is the photographer in all logical conclusion.
Wow you just proved I pay way better attention.
Well Once in A Life Time
This is a genuine question, but having followed your other comments I don’t trust that it is was of pure intent.Scintilla wrote:Where on earth did you see that?HeavyMetal wrote: wrote:Burn
Naota is the one that brought Mamimi the candles and lighters. People tend to miss that because of all the noise.
Anyway I haven’t been able to find what made me think this. That means so far you are right.
The part I thought I got the idea from Mamimi said Sandals not candles.
It was hard to tell. This is the seen.
Shortly after Naota figures out that Mamimi is the arsonist. There is a lot of talking from different time points all at the same time. Naota is doing voice over about the game fire starter. Mamimi had just dropped the game.
It was kind of difficult to hear everything in that part. The subtitles are not completely reliable as sometimes they differ slightly. That is true in a lot movies other than anime as well. Romeo Must Die is like that, but still really good.
I have not checked other parts of the show or the manga yet so I may have gotten the idea somewhere else.
I guess your like a broke military clock and get to be right once.
Her role becomes much more of a friend and less of a governing wanna be adult. Her whole personality shifts after her fight with Naota and after staying at his house. (This shift happens in both the manga and the show.) She becomes more loose and stress free. The manga makes more of point to show her as a control freak that learns to be a kid. She calls Mamimi immature, but really takes on some of her traits by the end.Scintilla wrote:I wouldn't say "starts to"; she's seen hanging with Gaku and Masashi as early as the beginning of episode 2.HeavyMeatl wrote: wrote:

That was your own interpretation. I was suggesting that it could be Mamimi's mother. I also said it was a point I was working on. I have not found enough proof, only artistic design and little circumstantial evidence. It comes up in the show that Mamimi's parents are divorced. Perhaps Mamimi's flirtatious nature comes from her mother. Mamimi, Haruko, and even Ninamori are really flirtatious in the manga. Naota even walks in on Haruko and Mamimi in his bed...together...you get the idea. I made it clear that this point was speculation. Even if they are not related they have some situational commonalities involving divorce, flirting, and even in a way Ninamori. More so in the manga with Ninamori. Both flirt with a male figure in her life; one her father, the other Naota.
If you really thought I didn't notice she was older after all the artistic comments I have made in my posts on this subject you are a moron.
Mamimi and the secretary have different eye color .... so duh.
Once again you redundant commentor. Look at Kamon's magazine at the end. If you don't get it ask, don't attack me.Scintilla wrote:As I've already said, where are you getting this from?HeavyMetal wrote: wrote:

I re-watch the whole show almost every time I post. Not to mention when I practice my guitar. Believe me I notice a lot. Next time don't be such a cocky pretentious jerk, Scintilla, when you have something to say. I am more than willing to admit when I make an error, but you have managed to point out one error without any real valid points of your own. Well maybe the director’s commentary, but like I said creativity is partially subconscious so sometimes connections exist beyond even the artist’s conscious awareness. Creativity is refined after its initial random jolt into the brain.
For that matter sometimes when I draw the expression and body language of the character end up reflecting what I feel at the time. I can go back and consciously change it, but the drawing never seems to have the same presence when I do that.
True that would nice. If you read the manga such a sequel could get real dirty real fast though. I think more craziness would be worth it. Ninamori might get mad over it though.ansem'skitty wrote:I would like to see a FLCL sequel where Haruko comes back when Naota's older. Perverted hijinx ensue.
In Closing:
Well I made one mistake. About time I suppose. I’ll keep looking for where I got the idea that Naota unwittingly gave Mamimi candles and matches. So far I mixed up the word sandals and candles, but I seem to remember something else that pointed to the idea. Oh well for when I have the time.
I am starting to get irritated with people that have little in the way of a valid point of their own, but just want to tell me how wrong I am.
If that is you, shut up.
I made A mistake. Jess...I have had more valid points than anyone else I have seen write on this show including web sites. For that matter I have only written less than half of the things I have noticed. Not to mention I may have been right just not about where I remember Noata with candles.
Why do I feel like I am sticking my neck out when offer up an idea or thought. I don't claim to be a guru, I just have a lot of stray thoughts. Sometimes they happen to right in a way most people would not think. Sometimes I screw up. Oh well.
I started writing in this post to help people that were having trouble with FLCL. I thought I might learn some things myself.
Now I find it is full of people that want no help and have no clue. Well some are nice.
I don't mind criticism, but please read all my posts completely first. I am tired of stupid comments when I clarify a point. Most of the time its from people not keeping up with all of what I wrote in mind, but rather attack me for not writing something that I wrote later or earlier in the post or in an earlier post. Plus I will clarify any point if I wasn’t clear to begin with. I forget things I want to say sometimes or what part made me think an I idea. All you half to do is ask what I meant instead of trying to more or less say I have no clue.
If you have something to say go back read all my posts first. It is too much to keep repeating. If you don't want to read my previous posts completely, then you have no grounds to make a SOLID argument against me unless your rreally good. That sounded a lot more arrogant than I intended. Heck I don't even remember some of my old post they're so old. Oh well nevemind, I don't care. Bash me if makes you feel better. I should stick to guitar and AMVs anyway.
Too many treky fans have branched out into other things. They want to debate the precise phrasing of something just to promote there own self opinion by insulting someone else. For those people get a life or laid or something.
Once again if you have genuine questions I will see if I can answer them.
If I make a mistake, opps. Let me know just don't be so mean about it. I hate getting mad. (That is kind of a paradox.)
Just please ask, don’t attack me.

Did anyone watch tonight's ep? I liked how what's-her-face turned out to be living her life like the cat in the play. It's pretty deep for such a seemingly senseless anime! Ah, that's why I like it...*sigh*
You're lucky... I've decided to let you live to see the day when I will rule the world.

Re: Whatever
Well, excuse me for never seeing any announcements in Kamon's magazine about a new photographer (though I did notice that Kamon had the photos in ep 1, and it is pretty hard not to notice that the picture with the "Fooly Coolly [sic]" caption is the one that Mamimi took, and now that I'm looking at ep 6 again on the DVD, I see a "Fresh Cameraman Photo Contest" in a magazine, though I don't see any indication that it's Kamon's) and never hearing anything about Mamimi's parents being divorced (though now that I Google for it, I found one <i>hint</i> that that might be the case: her line "My mom and dad both came to see me [in a school play] together. So it's a good memory" from episode 3 (source: http://oaf.anre.org/ep-1.php )).
I appear to have managed to badly offend someone without trying.
Excuse me while I go hide under this rock for a week.
See you all after ACen.
(No, I'm not being sarcastic or whiny. I seriously think I must have done something wrong if I manage to cheese somebody off that badly. I generally try not to offend people, and it pains me to find that I've failed.)
