I watched the whole thing in two sittings, from the great start to the "wtf?!" ending, and I still don't know what the hell that show was about.

okay, evangelion is about realizing that the person that we all are, is a person that is made up of multiple persons, a person in the mind of every person that that person has ever come into contact with
everyone must find they're own self-worth in themselves, not depending on others to make the decisions for them, be independant and proud of who you are because you yourself determine who you are

i think that's at least a general idea of what the series is about, if i'm wrong, or if you want to add more, please do

 Hey i just realized this. If you have read Ghost in the shell, they also touch on that theory. It is from Kabbalism i think if i remember. It is some deep stuff. So there is more than One "self". The Self that people see, your public self. And the inner self which only you can interact with. :D

Thanks for the forgiveness
You are correct, Asuka was an American citizen
thank you so much!!!!!!, ive been away a while now (a whole week perhaps, pondering on this, and researching, and yes, she was an american citizen, probrably got training over there or something..

more spoilers, just likeDaio Kaji said, the perception of each person creates a new version of that person in your head, i.e to misato, shinji may have been a troubled child, however, to asuka, he was a hinderence, but she liked him anyway....2 different versions of the same person, because they are perceived diferently from different perceptions.....so yeah, just like Daio Kaji said :?

It's customary to provide some kind of supporting evidence or reasoning when you say things like that.

Not once in the entirety of Evangelion was Asuka's name used in the same sentence as either "America" or "United States." Neither of her parents were American. She came over on a boat from Germany, and Unit 02 was configured for German.

Cole as Kaji has stated, Evangelion is fundamentally about the search for self-worth. A lot of people seem to hate Shinji, but guess what...you're supposed to. He represents us (and to a degree all the characters do) and the entire "story" is just a vehicle to tell the story of a boy finding that he has self-worth and doesn't need to be defined by what others think or him being a pilot.

It's also been said this entire story is just about Hideaki Anno's (the creator) own self-triumph after his own depression.

I know the story may seem convoluted (although the answers and what happens story-wise is all there), the fundamental meaning and concepts are unrelated. As stated earlier, the story is just a vehicle for the viewer so that they can see the story of the boy Shinji (as well as other characters and their plights).

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me about it...I've already answered a good deal of questions dealing with this :).

i didn't read ghost in the shell, but i saw the movie, i remember that scene ur talking about, the one in the boat right?
the chick robot was talking about everyone in the entire world being unique because of the memories we have that shape our being, we are all different because we experience things differently and all those different experiences (perspectives) define us
"all those memories a person accumulates in a life-time are just another drop in the bucket" (probably not exact quote, but close enough, i know that this quote doesn't necessarily apply here, but it popped into my mind while writing this, so that's my justification for writing this and that makes it a valid choice, because that's what i wanted)

Because it's not that simple...I mean don't get me wrong people can enjoy it for that, but I feel (and well...a lot of others including the creators) that there is a lot underneath the surface/story. Episodes 25/26 alone show that it's not that simple.

Given, I know Mr.Oni will come in here and yell about how it sucks and whatnot (which I'd appreciate if he didn't), but at the same time a lot of people feel that way just as you do and same with how I feel. At the very least, at least we enjoy the same show :).
