I have to admit, it was Shinkai's work that finally made me realize that making an indie thing was entirely possible for one guy and a computer. So I owe him my... well... he can have half of a melon pan.

Hoshi no Ou Kodomo?
More like Hoshinolamenobody, amirite?
And man, I'm getting really irritated at what a huge boner Shinkai seems to have for particular types of imagery. Okay, we get it, it's obviously meaningful visuals to him... but it's one thing to be consistently self-referential, and another to be repetitive. In the short trailer, there's 50% extremely cool-looking new stuff and 50% of EXACTLY THE SAME SCENE AS EVERY OTHER SHINKAI MOVIE. I seriously hope the ratio in the actual movie is not like that, or I will rage

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I'm not talking about anything specific expectation-wise, I'd just like to not see shameless art motif recycling.Nya-chan Production wrote:Oto: What did you expect, new GitS? |:
Some artists and directors do it very well, but Shinkai is really pushing it thin. His art is amazing, but the sentimentalism behind the imagery is growing shallower and more trite with every production he makes. In part it's just the fact that he still can't write and his characters are universally composed of the same two people: a navel-gazing narrator (representing himself) and the object of his affections. It's starting to border on bad taste. The scenery design and symbolism always consists of the exact same elements. You can see them right there in that trailer. And I say that as someone who genuinely likes Shinkai as animator - but just PLEASE, make him stop repeating himself... he's seriously not as good and deep as he thinks he is, and the only way to fix that is to do something interesting for a change.
I'm honestly saddened by the fact that although his production has obviously improved, he hasn't visualized anything new since Voices of a Distant Star, and hasn't actually said anything new or interesting since She and Her Cat. And real clouds are still better to look at than his.

I do think this looks really interesting. The shots look like something more fantasy-based and such in comparison to his previous works.
I'm pretty much not willing to watch his earlier works because of the hype and EXTREEEEEEME overuse, but at least this one looks interesting. Almost a combination of a Shangri-La and Fantastic Children kind of atmosphere.
