WAIT: What Anime Is That, a screenshot recognition engine

Post by mirkosp » Tue May 02, 2017 1:13 pm

Hello there, fellow AMVers!

I'm sure many of you have found screenshots or clips of anime laying around and thinking "wow, that looks great, I need to find what anime it is, because I totally want to use it in my next AMV!"
Well, fear not, for we have one new tool to help us: WAIT!
No, I'm not telling you to wait, that's simply its name.
What Anime Is That currently has a fair collection of anime from the year 2000+ and on, so it won't do on older shows, but should be pretty good for newer stuff, at least as far as TV series go.

Here it is, if you need it: https://trace.moe/

Its usage is straightforward, and I'm sure it'll be of help! |:>

EDIT: For clarity, I am not the developer of WAIT. I merely found it and naturally thought of sharing it here.

HOLY SHIT! This is the holy grail of AMV editing resources. I can't believe how casual your post is! This is HUGE! :awesome:

I just tested it with the following images and got perfect matches

Very neat, went through your slides and it's really fascinating. One thing you don't discuss is where the collection is coming from/how it's updated (understandably).

Is it still only using Color Layout to find matches? This would make a neat addition to a discord bot, and since you have an api, that should be pretty straightforward.

Ah, don't be confused, I'm not the developer! I just found it out today, and thought about sharing it here since it's most definitely useful for AMV editors.

Doesn't google image search basically do the same thing? Granted if the image is really popular you may just get a ton of links to repostings but I've been able to find pretty much every series I've looked for with it.

Google image search can be useful, but nothing like this. The recognition engine even lists the timestamp and episode of the scene. Also, for googole to work, the image has to already be available online in a image format. If you take a random screenshot from a anime or AMV, and nobody has uploaded that image before, then googling it won't produce any results.

Exactly. If you use this in conjuntion with sakugabooru, you'll quickly find pretty much any scene you might need for your AMVs. The most mind numbing part of editing for me has always been looking for the scenes, but nowadays we got it easier than ever.
