What is your take the the outburst of anime Newbies?

Post by shinjix2 » Mon Apr 14, 2003 1:36 am

Anyone who saw the cowboy beebop parody, fanboy beebop, knows what a "Newbie" is and it is a word often used to describe the increasing swarms of people who obsess themselves with "public" anime. You all know who I'm talking about, the Dragon Ball Z patrons who always says that "goku can kick anyones ass" while never seeing another anime, or what is soon to come from any new public released series that we all know and love, aka Trigun and Kenshin. It just kinda sickens me to see it go public. Am I wrong for being possesive of keeping it cult or should it be widespread to the public to where we are now: being able to turn it on to about any channel and seeing some god aweful anime (digimon, yu gi oh, beyblade, NEW transformers) scoring huge crowds of people who think they are the shit when it comes to knowing everything about anime.

The worst about those newbies is that they dont seem to realize that they are missing alot just seeing it on tv. i have mixed feelings about it. when cartoon network had the giant robot week they showed the first two eps. of eva. what was horrid was that not five min. after the first ep was over i heard people talking about maybe getting some of it if they saw more. i found this bad because the first of it is nothing like the rest it could easily make people get the wrong idea of what eva is about. but newbies need a place to find new anime so....
"And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow in the morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust"

Everyone's so harsh on newbies,
sure they are fun to laugh at but we were all newbies once.
The poor bastards have to start somewhere, its a growing stage, first they will see DBZ and go on about how great that is and make endless supplies of DBZ Linkin Park AMVs but adventually they will move on.
Kenshin and Trigun going public will open up eyes, However from what I heard people saying about TV releases (the cutting) it probably wont make a good release anyway. Even so, if they do like them chances are they will rave on about them and start buying them contributing to the globilistation of more anime. Then, people like me will be able to come across it easier without the extensive effort i've had to undertake in order to get my supplier.
anyway, failing that, nubes are fun to laugh at.

Heh I can say I am better than them. Dragon ballz and the like kept me away from anime because of the horrid drawings. Wasn't til I saw slayers the movie that I got hooked because I fell in Love with Lina inverse. Imagine cartoons you can wack to! A novel idea.

The mindset of "anime is only for sophisticated people" is just your ego talking to you. Personally, more people wanting more anime can only be good for it's availiability and cost if you ask me.

I kind of agree with you about feeling "possessive," however I don't feel that way because I want it to stay cultish. If anything, I think we as fans would love for it to be more mainstream b/c A) more people are watching great things and B) more things will get licensed and things will become cheaper. For me of course, it's more A though since there are such great stories and characters to be seen and heard.

However, I do feel possessive when things like what Cartoon Network has done to Rurouni Kenshin happen. They've edited out just about everything and made the show retarded with it's unmotivated voice actors and senseless edits. I am "possessive" of this show because it's one of my favorites and since I want people to see the great things (point A), it really sucks to see that people will see this crap and then begin to tell me about the show when all they've seen is the CN crap.

I know some people will somehow start arguing me, but I also hate that it's just going to create more people who talk about how dubs are so great and how "if I want to read, I'd go pick up a book." No matter if you like dubs or not, that statement is just retarded.

I guess I have no problems with anime going mainstream and their being n00bs since you gotta start somewhere (as someone said), but I have problems when they're not even seeing the things correctly. I guess what I'm getting at is that if good anime is shown..well..badly, all it's going to create are more ignorant fans who talk about how Goku can kick everyone's ass and so on.

Fanboy Beebop? Never heard of it. I first encountered the word newbie playing Jedi Knight online, at least 4 years ago... ::goes back on topic::

Newbies?... meh.
As long as they don't bug me with: "How much anime have you seen? (expecting a number)"...Or... "Have you seen DNA^2? how about Burn Up Excess?"... Or... "dude that fight scence was the coolest ever!"...Or... "that guy who made Eva has problems!"...Or... "This Chobits thing is kinda crap"
I could go on for days. Yes, these are quotes of actual newbie stuff I put up with in real life. Where were we... I lost the plot for a second. ::re-reads thread::, ok.
Is this all about the mainstreaming of anime? Anime is everyone's... well actually it's the licensors, but that's a different story.
Personally I've never seen Kenshin or Trigun, well I did see the Kenshin OAV (put me right off the series, sword fighting and a whole lot of meh), and I think I'll wait for the Trigun box-set.
The last television screening of an anime series (here*) was BGC2040 about 2 years ago. I don't recall too much commotion about it... actually I didn't watch it (bought the VHS about the year before). Big deal.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
YOU PEOPLE WATCH TOO MUCH TELEVISION

*if Foxtel have some kind of anime channel thing, I have no idea I don't watch enough TV for it to be worth the money*

I think you bring up some good points, in particular that anime is everyone's or rather...anyone who buys it :-P. We live in a free economy and everyone is free to buy and watch what they want.

As for Kenshin...I'd say watch the TV-series. I can see why you feel the way you do about the OVA, that's mainly b/c you saw it out of context (it takes place after the TV-series...not chronological, but in the manga). Honestly, I kind of get annoyed when people tell me how badass samurai X is. Those people tend to just like the whoop-ass and death and would be VERY disappointed if they saw the TV-series. I also kind of hate that that's all they see the show for :(....oops went on a totally different rant.

Aside from the oav, the kenshin series is practically the anti-samari x, if you dont like on there is a good chance you will like the other.

I do have to admit you guys bring alot of good points, especially the dub wars one, i personally like subbbed but sometimes i get lazy and just want to listen :D .
Another note, fanboy beebop is a story about these diehard otakus that goes to a con and relizes how much it has been ran over by newbies, and in the end the moral of the story is "we were all once newbie, but we dont have to like it" there is more to the story so i suggest you go out and look for it!

Uhm...I was making the point against dubbing not for...I was saying annoying it was when people say "if I wanna read, I'd go buy a book" or something else retarded. I'm talking about how most n00bs won't watch something in a foreign language either b/c of A) ignorance (don't realize it was originally created with the intent of japanese voice...it is Japanese), B) laziness or C) (this sounds stupid) pride (No joke...I've met a handful of fans that tell me that English is a superior language and blah blah blah...these would be the type that buy EVERYTHING USA...like their cars, clothes, etc...there's a fine line between pride and racism.).

In any case....I hope this is more clear....I really don't wanna start another dub/sub debate...it's only been a month since the last one...we're not due for one for another 3 - 4 months.
