Wow, loving the mass generalization and seething anger over there
But, if there's one dumb thing otaku-ism spawns, it's stuff like this (courtesy of BBT)

Everyone is not the same as you.
Get over it.
And lighten up.

Well, some things otakuism spawns are pretty darn ugly. Then again, so are many things spawned by other religions (religions? well, I said it now).
I see nothing wrong with seeing my hobby as a tad above an average cartoon. If needed, I have empirical proof that it is.
I see nothing wrong with Japanophilia. Liking things Japanese does not imply complete cultural blindness or lack of knowledge.
I don't disagree with you completely. Just that it's a pretty major generalization regarding a very diverse group of people. There are many informed, rational peole among otakuist rows.
An underlying implication your statements carry: otaku are losers preoccupied with little beyond their weird little fetish. I beg to differ.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

LOL I dont know where I fit in that statement.
Im over 30, and Im over weight but Im not ugly and I own my own home.
I love things Japanese because I am fascinated with other cultures but not obsessive about it. There are many aspects of Japanese culture I find very attractive and admirable.
I think alot of the women in Jap anime like Naru, Dita, and such are very cute. I dont worship them...honest.
I even date and have a social life.

This needs to be replied to.
1) Cosplay... so what? the majority of the time it's tasteful, and when it isn't the people cosplaying know it isn't and they're just doing it for a laugh. There are much more fucked up guys out there who wear dresses and try to give a reason.
2)Ugly people... That's a very big generalisation. How is anime responsible for making people ugly? There are far more uglier non-otaku, then there are ugly otaku, or even otaku on that note.
3)Ugly fat people who cosplay cute thin characters. I mentioned that before. Most of it is a joke. And it's not their fault.
4)Hyperactive 12-year-olds. Well I don't know any personally. Only dealt with them. So what? That really comes under the misinterpretation of otaku and the concept that it is cool. There are far too many people to blame for this and I won't start. Basically when an article claims that otaku are looked upon as geeks in Japan, but then defends the use of it otherwise in the US or elsewhere. They are to blame.
5)Japanese fanatics. I see more people wearing USA jumpers and some form of American flag thing than I do people wearing Asian equivilants. My friends and I cleared the entire city of Pocky, now we're on to the imitation Pocky (Peperco or something). We're still very wholesome and social people.
6)DDR type games... huh I don't understand. Maybe dating sims is a more appropriate addition.
7)Fat balding 30 year old nerds. I know people like this (well he's 36). He's not a bad guy. I actually find conversations with him to be quite insightful. Would you prefer pedophiles(sp)?
8)Worshipping anime girls. Does this forum have a linear mindset or what? Yes. I am obessive about Chii, It's healthy... Until the cosplayers arrive.
9)Hentai. It can't be helped. I'm not going to comment on this. Hentai is for people who have nothing better to do. And quite frankly I have much better things I could be doing instead opf typing this.
10)Oh, there was only 9.
In short Otaku = Geek, what do you expect? But most of the negative attributes mentioned are shared by both otaku and non-otaku alike.
Otaku-ism has also created a lot of good too, possibly more than most religions. But that is something I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole.
PS: This is just staing the obvious... why did you bother?

Well, to apply the statement to myself -
I'm under 30
I mostly live in my basement
I don't cosplay. I have considered making Amarao-like eyebrows at one point, but first I need to find a material to make them out of that I'm not allergic to
I don't consider myself ugly. I don't consider myself too attractive, either. I am not overweight.
I'm not obsessed with Japan. However, I do like it enough to have plans to go on exchange there in a year or so and then go work there for a few years after finishing my current ongoing stage of education.
I do not worship anime girls. That said, I do not have any problem admitting that I do find them likeable and attractive. I know some people who do find that outrageous. Don't know why. I do not like hentai.
Actually, this reminds me a bit of a friend of mine - who likes anime but gets disgusted when people start talking about attractive qualities of anime characters. Apparently, some people don't like the thought of looking at anything that is inked in a sexual context.
I say that's just avoiding the obvious.
