Stratus Anime Quick Pick

Post by OmniStrata » Tue Jul 30, 2002 12:03 am

Ok, I'm just throwing in something and if you wish to respond. (no agree/disagree/flames. This is, like other things, an opinion of mine alone.)

I'll start doing (at random intervals) anime DVD reviews consisting of minor stuff here and there with similar scores listed in the amv opinion screens.

My anime quick pick: Samurai Girl - Real Bout High School!

The joke is that I picked up the volume 2 of this title today by accident without ever owning volume 1!!! (review based on volume 2)

Quick tech run down. (spoiler-free) The DVD menu is bad ass. It's very well planned resembling a fighting game of sorts. I almost got confused and grabbed my XboX controller! (j/k) Anyways, aside from the kick ass menu, the extras section had lots of stuff pertaining to the GONZO crew. More like a Behind the Scenes you might say. Their studio seems quite organized from what I've seen at other Anime Production Companies. (not that I've seen that many, mostly in Animerica and online mags.)

The show itself. One quick phrase sums it all up. Saturday Morning Fanservice! Yep, there's quite a bit of goofy, cleavage, and booty. I like those 3. It DEFINITELY has that Saturday morning feel in terms of comedy and execution. It even LOOKS like one! Those of you who hate CG will have to stop watching anime REAL soon cause practically all the new companies are using it now. This show uses it quite a bit, but not to the extreme as Blue Submarine No. 6. (same company, go figure.)

The art. Keiji Gotoh. I'm normally used to seeing his more "kiddyish" themes in his art. (Gatekeepers, Nadesico, etc.) This show showcases his more "curvish" talents. Much like his work in "Those who Hunt Elves". VERY CURVY THESE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BE!!! If I didn't see his name in the credits, I'd have guessed someone else. (their faces are a Gotoh giveaway as well.)

The music. Hoppy and sugary. I like it. Can't say much here but the fighting music has that "fight game" feel. It's not as adrenaline pumping as Noir, but it serves well. I like the soundtrack.

The overall. This anime is pretty good and I think I'll go ahead and get the rest starting with VOLUME 1. (doh! gotta watch the spines for the volume numbers more closely. but dvds have such sexy slim spines...) Who'll like it? I got it at $29.99 (not including that 8% tax) and it has 3 eps. 10 bucks an ep may seem kind of steep but I'm satisfied with the goof of this show. People are vomiting gallons in it too! (the characters, not my friends... ^_^)

Who'll like it? People who like action and some comedy with a little bit of that goofy "Sailor Moonish" "otherworld" stuff. Hard to explain, but you got to see it.

Who'll hate it? The Evangelion and other extreme knowledgable ones who want an anime with a twisting plot and substance. I for one love it.

Originality: A fighting high school with otherworldly visitors? Sounds vaguely familiar, but I'd give it an 8.

Capture (design): Keiji Gotoh draws hot babes and bad ass bishounen. The use of CG was more skilled in this one than in some of GONZO'S earlier works.

Sound (is it clear and likeable): I love the music. It's CD worthy and it's dancable.

Action(genre / type): It's called "Samurai Girl - Real Bout High School". What type of action would you expect? (no hentai needed. it's got the fanservice covered with skirts too short for public broadcast...) Lots of fighting and mystic powers abound.

(English) Lip synch: it's a joke. this genre don't belong here and will never be here again. (oh wait, the eng dub) The english dub followed the lips quite exactly and the acting is decent. Though, since it's a comedy, don't expect to laugh too hard listening to the actors. Hear the Japanese and listen to their emotions explode! ^_^ The voices come from actors heard in various Pioneer titles. (this company reference should give you a good idea of whose voices you'll recognize)

Digital FX: Quite a bit. Mostly for teleporting in monsters. (minor spoiler) but nothing too overused like in Initial D and such.

Effort: The company does a good job making this anime, though the large amount of cast also helps. Hard to make an anime with a HUGE amount of people.

Overall: I like this anime. You will too if you like animation such as FLCL, Excel, Ghostbusters Extreme, Those who Hunt Elves, Nadesico (just for Gotoh's work), and other fun fluff anime.

Reviewable: The skirts are short. Far too short to be a hindance in combat. It's a good thing right? I like the fights in this DVD! ^_^

[why am I doing this? to practice my reviewing skills and the like. I'm only wondering if more of you will take like 5 mins of your time to do the same. I noted that Digital Dojo was looking for a new series and think that a little "review forum" like this in the "anime forum" is fine.]

Tell me what ya think of the review ok?

 :D :o
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
