Robotech
Now, I know most of you don't consider Robotech to be true-to-form Anime, but I do. It is the first "cartoon" I saw that had drama, and it had plenty of plot to back it up. Other than the great plot, can I get an Amen for action? Who wouldn't want to own a Veritech or fly for the RDF? And, for the guys, this anime-gone-amerime has plenty of wide-eyed girls. Mmm mm. So, action, drama, girls. What more could a young kid want? So I wanna know what you think about Robotech & Co. Likes, dislikes, all of that mess. If you want to talk Techie, IM me (Toddiosity on AIM).

I have very serious issues with Robotech. Here's why.
Robotech is the brutal mangling of 3 anime titles: Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeda.
Now... like many, I watched Robotech and enjoyed it... until I learned the truth about the show.
Obviously, Robotech is anime, since all the messed up footage comes from anime titles... just like the messed up Escaflowne and Cardcaptors... it's just f'ed up anime.
However... Robotech is as offensive as if someone took footage from Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and Matrix and tried to palm it off as one series.
For me, there is something very, very wrong with what was done to create Robotech. It reminds me of those awful Looney Toon movies where they link up all these edited shorts from old cartoons and then link them with some badly animated storyline.
Yes - Robotech made many anime fans... but I don't think that justifies Robotech.
Get the Macross set from AnimEigo
I hate trying to explain to certain anime fans why there are no Invid in Macross Plus (and I had to do stuff like that for ages before a-m-v.org ever existed)
Those are my thoughts.

I remember watching Robotech, and for some reason, the captain had orange skin......nad this annoyed me to no end. I know not why, being six I could accept the transforming jets, but I couldn't deal with an odd skin pigment.

The first third of Robotech is the Macross TV series. THe Macross portion of Robotech was the least mangled portion (with the notable exception of the horrible songs they put in... the songs that still sound off in my worst nightmares)samurairyu wrote:I always thought that Robotech was the precourser of Macross. Considering that it was Macross city and later in Macross Plus we see the Robotech battleship still in the middle of the lake
Just to correct information... the show was Super Dimensional Fortress: Macross. The ship in the lake is the actual Macross.
The official timeline (based on the series timeline, not on the release dates of these titles) would be:
Macross Zero (set during the Unification War)
Macross
Macross Plus (a side story that exists within the continuity, but has no impact on the overall universe)
Macross 7
(Odd note: In Macross 7, they film "The Macross Movie (Love, Do You Rememeber?)" so the argument of the writers is that the Macross Movie only exists in the Macross timeline as a movie filmed within the Macross continuity... Kinda makes the head hurt)

But didn't the Macross 7 fleet run into an entire Meltrandi fleet in one episode? The separation of Meltran and Zentran was only in DYRL, not the original SDF Macross . . . . . I always thought M7 was based off of the DYRL continuity. Of course, that Meltran battle was from a supposed "unaired" episode.Macross 7

I must admit I don't know about the episode you're talking about... but I can assure you that Macross 7 is part of the official continuity...
In fact, in episode 2 of Macross Zero, they had some lines that helped knit the continuity further together (during the scene on the interior of the crashed ship that would eventually become the SDF: Macross)
I have a friend who is like a living encyclopedia of Macross lore and he is amazing at how he connects all the dots (mostly amazing because he knows the names of everything in that show...)
