Most Underrated/OverRated anime
Most Underrated:
Full Metal Panic (not on the top 30?)
Escaflowne (should be higher IMO)
Kanon (1st 7 episodes: Worst anime ever. Last 6 episodes: Best anime ever)
Berserk (bad ending didnt completely ruin a surprising series)
Love Hina (as silly as that might sound)
Most Overrated (ducks to avoid flames):
Trigun (A Good, simple anime, but not the 3rd best anime IMO (see top 30 anime).)
Cowboy Bebop (an elite anime, most definitely worthy of the top 10, but 6-7 great episodes and 19 wandering, meandering episodes a "greatest anime ever" it does not make)
FLCL (Plot made sense. Random actions didnt. Spoofs were funny [south park, matrix, bunny girl, etc]. Random actions werent. What a strange and painful anime this was for me. Its one of the few animes I can say I disliked. I want my time back)
DBZ (just cant quite put my finger on why...)
Kenshin (a nice show overall, but is a little too kiddy in the first third, and a little hokie in the last third. Much like trigun, its #4 rating seems a little high)
Excel Saga (episode 4 made me cry laughing. Thats the only time in the series I laughed. Excel, Pedro, etc, were very annoying)
Well anyway, what do you guys think?

I agree with almost everything on that list...however, I still think Love Hina is more at home under overrated (then again, I also find Tenchi was pretty overrated...maybe it's just a bias towards El Hazard, I dunno)
Anyways, some other candidates for over/underrated: (bear in mind, these might just be me talking, I can't speak for anyone else)
Overrated:
Inu Yasha - Is it good? Yeah...Is it great? Ehh...I'd have to disagree
Mononoke Hime - Again, this was good, but IMO Miyazaki's done better stuff (such as Laputa, Castle of Cagliostro and Nausicaa)
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Unwritten rule of the cosmos #735 If you market the boxset with the phrase 'The greatest anime of all time' you've officially declared yourself overrated (as, let's face it, there is no way to determine what anime will truly be the greatest through the ages...Hell, even now I'd say Doraemon has the better chance at it...if a show's been running 30+ years and, to the best of my knowledge is still going, they've gotta be doing something right)
Underrated (Here, I'm gonna have to specify on my votes):
Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 - Sure, this one's a hit in Japan, but the majority of the US fans still seem to dislike it (mostly only the grounds of it's older animation and lack of fancy Wing-esque mecha)
Lupin III - OK, again it's a hit in Japan and it does have a good-sized following in the US, but it still gets sold short quite a bit on the grounds of dated animation (God, I hate when people do that...)
Hmmm...kind of drawing a blank further (once again, these opinions reflect only one person's thoughts...anyone agreeing is just welcome coincidence...well...except that first part cause kearly pointed those out first)

Well, this isn't based off the top 30 anime list.
Most overrated:
DBZ (lots of fans who fail to acknowledge the repetitive nature)
Samurai X (look how fast his sword moves, how high the blood splurts, this is the coolest action anime ever - fans who don't even know it's supposed to be angsty drama)
Eva (one of the most hyped anime, even those who hate the main character and have no idea what's gong on in half the series join the worshippers - brainwashing?)
Inuyasha (your typical schoolgirl AU pretending to be action, with a reptitive plot that few seem to recognize - find a fragment, save each other, cuteness then on to the next fragment, save each other, cuteness, then find the next fragment, save each other, cuteness, on and on)
Love Hina (gotta love seeing a geeky guy surrounded by large breasted females who beat on him at every opportunity - slapstick fanservice pretending to be romantic)
Yu Yu Hakusho (action and comedy - fans who don't see the large mix this anime has to offer)
Most underrated:
DBZ (lots of elitists who fail to acknowledge the excellent characterizations)
Rurouni Kenshin (oh, Kenshin looks girly and doesn't like to kill, it's not the same character - people who fail to realize he never liked to kill in the first place and all the gratuitous violence they loved was *supposed* to be depressing from the character's standpoint)
Sailormoon (the most annoying voice actor after GW's Relena - people who watch the dub without ever knowing how serious the anime is in its original form)
Gundam Wing (girly boys and mecha - people who fail to look beyond the visuals to see the storyline and depth to the characters)
Card Captor Sakura (the only cutsy anime I'll watch - that should say something for the mix of 'comedy/character growth/drama" aside from the shoujo prettines)
Yu Yu Hakusho (another dbz - people don't see the entire anime and stereotype it far too soon)

OVerrated: DBZ (no plot)
Sailor Moon (Annoying as hell)
SD Gundam (Why the hell is this on Toonami? Super Deformed garbage it is, Superior Defense is just dumb)
Underrated: Rurouni Kenshin (depth of plot, character integrity, and moral dillema)
Gundam Wing (IMMENSE Character and idealistic depth, also military coups are handled well, DBZ type fans just are too dense to get it, with characters like Relena)

I think you guys don't really understand what it means to be UNDERATED.
Rouroni Kenshin (the series) has a HUGE fanbase, I mean MASSIVE. The OAVs were made simply BECAUSE the fanbase was THAT DAMN BIG. In order for something to be UNDERATED, it must be deemed sucky by many many people. RK is NOT underated. Neither is Berserk, Love Hina, Escaflowne, Dbz, or YYH. All animes that ALSO have huge fanbases.
As for overated, definately EVA.

Eva is probably one of the most over rated animes out there. I love it ... but some people go beyond the realm of fanaticism ... and that jsut gets creepy ...
DBZ is not over rated ... just whored around on day-time TV too much. If it were removed it would probably be a step in the right dirrection.

When I determine how something rates, I look to see if the amount of 'fans' outweighs the amount of 'haters' for that anime. I'd agree that DBZ has a huge fanbase, but I'd also wager the base of 'non-fans' is nearly the same as the fanbase. In which case, there isn't a majority of people liking it - it's half and half. Another way to look at it - YYH has a large (growing) fanbase. Not enough people know of it to really hate it yet, so the amount of people who like it far outweigh the ones who don't. But the amount of people who like it - compared to more well-known anime like dbz is very small. Compared to dbz or eva, yyh has a tiny fanbase (though it is growing quickly) - compared to them, yyh would be under rated for the simple fact that few (in comparison to popular anime) know of it and love/hate it. I say dbz is underrated because while it does have a huge fanbase, it also has a huge base of people who hate it.
Let me try and put this into math since numbers are easier (and no, I haven't counted the number of fans for an anime so this is all 'imaginary' numbers to prove a point).
If dbz has a fanbase of 1200 and a hatebase of 800 then the actual ratio is 3/2. Say eva has a fanbase of 600 and a hatebase of 100 making the ratio 6/1. Comparing the two I'd say eva had better be perfect to keep from being overrated with that many more people loving it than hating it. YYH may have a fanbase of 200 with a hatebase of 20 giving it a 10/1 ratio - that would make it overrated...right? But considering the numbers are climbing daily for this anime I won't say that - instead I'd say that once more people see it the ratio is more likely to be similar to dbz's ratio - maybe a 5/3 in the end.
My point, I do 'underrated' if the number of people who don't like it (or don't know it) outweigh the number of fans the anime has. For yyh the number of people who don't know it still outnumber the ones who do - so it's underrated. For dbz, the number of people who hate it come close to the number of people who love it - so it's also underrated on my list.
I just have my own definition for 'under rated' and 'over rated'. ^_^
