SWF, 26, seeking non-crappy anime - Suggestions?
After watching various shows on Brett's comp DVDs and at cons, I've gotten pretty sick of anime as a whole. The most recent anime I really enjoyed were Azumanga Daioh, Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers.
Could anyone please recommend a strong character-based show or OVA series that has very few or none of the following...?
- toy marketing
- pedophilia
- gratuitous camwhore-style angst as a substitute for character development
- exclusively under-18 cast
- effeminate male characters blatantly calculated to appeal to newly pubescent female viewers
- "Must save the world from evil overlord!"
- "See, it's funny because she punched him because he accidentally saw her boobies!"
- "Wait, shit, uhh, let's write this plot hole away with some bad science!"
- "This guy is a pasty nerd with no personality, and yet, inexplicably, all seven of us hot ladies want him so bad!"
- "I'm secretly in love with you but I won't say it because then the show would end--- urrr, I mean, because I'm stubborn, and that's HILARIOUS!"
With two anime rental places open nearby, I'm contemplating renting RahXephon, and finally finishing watching Boogiepop Phantom. Worth it?
Suggestions very much appreciated.

Evangelion, Escaflowne ("Wait, shit, uhh, let's write this plot hole away with some bad science!") I can tell this is going to be hard.
Love Hina (*looks back up at list. Wow, not even...)
.....Sighs.....
Best I can come up with is Ranma 1/2 (I'm ignoring a few rules for this one because its pretty good), Kanon (be patient!), Maybe Chobits, and maybe Kenshin (unless you consider kenshin effeminate). These arent my top 4 animes or anything, but they probably violate the fewest rules...
Ah, here we go! READ OR DIE! Short, sweet, must see. I don't think it breaks any of those rules.

? You guys must be joking.
EK the bad news is: As a whole anime over the past year or so has been well, terrible. Of late, all I could think of that might fit your requirements are:
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (the whole under 18 thing, might cause some anger) It's more or less like the better filler episodes of the original series. It's all fun but may get annoying. (ie Sagara's weapon humour)
ROD the TV It starts out rather well. Then goes onto what I like to call the "This show is about people with unnatural powers and they hardly ever use them" Still worth having a look.
I'm kinda low on sleep, so sorry if I'm not too helpful.[/b]

FINISH BOOGIEPOP PHANTOM!
And after that, uhh...
My current obsession is Azumanga Daioh, but you said you saw that already.
I'm also fond of Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna, but I haven't heard almost anyone else talk about it around here. Kind of in the mystery genre, I guess.
After re-reading your list of things NOT to include, I'd also have to suggest FLCL if you haven't seen it yet. I don't think it has any of those ingredients in it, oddly enough.

I can't get at any exact suggestion, but those descriptions made me laugh out loud
Because, of course, they're true. Strange how I usually look past them. On the other hand, I don't watch much anime to start with, so these things probably haven't had time to get old on me.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
