Hm.. as a main genre, I don´t like the romance. But romantic sidestorys like the Sagara/Chitori affair in FMP, the somewhat love between Robin and Amon in Witch Hunter, and of course the chaotic romance in Ranma1/2 are the spice in the most of my fav. series.
But I think I prefer the romance/comedy combination. Romance/drama combinations tend to take over the storyline (like in Escaflowne)

My personal favorite romantic anime was
El Hazard - the original OAV. It has the best romance
story of any anime I can think of.
I happen to like romance... it's one of the reasons I'm an anime fan
Ranging from romantic comedies (like Ranma 1/2 or Maison Ikkoku)
to romance series (like Kare Kano and Fushigi Yugi)
to series that just happen to have some romantic elements in them
The one thing I really hate, though, is romance done badly.

I prefer Romance/Action with a sprinkle of comedy (not the slapstick Love Hina type action/comedy romance anime). Rurouni Kenshin comes to mind here, more action than romance, but it's there and the drama is sharp, it just doesn't flood the entire anime.
Magic Knight Rayearth has the aspects of your typical shoujo romance anime, but the action saves it. The entire plot of the first season is based around a romantic pairing, but it never drowns the rest of the anime. And the second season continues the romance but including more comedy and action/drama to go with it.
Berserk has an unhealthy mix of action and romance, but the dark nature of the anime might be too heavy to include it here - I haven't seen all of this series yet, but I've read enough spoilers to get an idea.
Yu Yu Hakusho has a number of romances mixed with the action, but the comedy is a little strong - and the few romantic pairings that aren't combined with humor are downright angsty - so it doesn't fit the typical scenario.
Inuyasha has a nice mix of action and romance, but again - the comedy is heavy and the romance tends to be melodramatic - instead of mixing with the action, it tends to come in spurts and take over the story a bit much, especially toward the latter part of the series.
Fushigi Yuugi tries to be an action/romance anime, but the melodrama is overwhelming, the sap floods the plot, and the few remaining aspects are dramatically angsty to the point where it might as well not *be* an action anime.
I haven't seen enough to really go far with the Romance/Action anime - though Escaflowne comes to mind, I do think the romance flooded the story in that one. Sailormoon tries for it, but I don't consider the action in that as real 'action' - it's too ritualistic and melodramatic. CardCaptor Sakura has plenty of romance, but like SM, it isn't action so much as pretty shoujo lightshows to spark up the drama and cuteness of the plot.
Pure romance anime? Anything shoujo that doesn't rely too heavily on comedy or male-oriented fanservice. Utena comes to mind here, and Earthian, the softer shoujo ai and shonen ai titles. And the simple anime like 'Marriage' where the entire purpose of the anime is to be sappy romance.

Dramatic romance- Princess Tutu
Dark romance- Mars [manga]
Straight-up romance- Kare Kano
Complex romance- Marmalade Boy
Romantic comedy- Ranma 1/2
Quiet romance- Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou [manga]
I think that covers most of the categories. And also five of my favourite ten series. Getting some clue about me as an anime watcher?

In the Romantic Comedy Category, I would say, Love Hina, maybe Tenchi Muyo OVA. They don't start too romantic like but, it's got they've got their moments. Romance I would have to say, Onegai Teacher and Kanon. I just re-watched Kanon, its sad and its got alot of romantic situations.
