my aussie bootleg issue

Post by bum » Sat May 08, 2004 12:04 pm

ok, for anyone that doesnt know, i live in australia. and well, as far as anime is concerned we're a bit poor. not exactly lacking alot, but things usualy take their time geting here, and sometimes, alot of series (that make it to the usa) never hit out shores. for example, witch hunter robin only started coming out here this march. it was released in the usa over a year ago. now, considering that i may never see alot of anime "legaly" released here, would it still be wrong for me to buy bootlegs of anime that hasnt bein released here, anda s far as i can see doesnt have a release date here (usualy i check with EB and some dvd sites) ? i dont know weather i should because, in all honesty i'd rather download something (or get a freind to download) in half decent quality than spend a small amount of money on an awsome quality dvd bootleg. my problem is not getting/spending the money. its knowing that if i buy bootlegs then im suporting bootlegers, which i realy dont wana do. but sometimes i feel as though i dont have much choise

Of course you have choice. Just don't buy the bootlegs. I know that anime fans has the tempatations to want almost every highly-rated series/movies that's been placed in the market, but sometimes you just have to deal with these.

You could always get stuff from eBay, though I imagine the S&H would be hell. You'd have to be careful to avoid bootlegs too.

yeap m8 i had the same problem a wile ago... the lack of anime in the UK forced me to start buying bootlegs... and like you i didnt like the thought of give those people my money. i'd say it is justicifed if you buy bootlegs, because its understandable.

but as those who have posted be4 me said, buying from the US and ebay is the best answer, thats what i do now. but in my case i have a sweet deal because UK dvds are £20 and in the US dvds are (mostly) $20.... and $20 = £10 so i get most shit half price. anothing is that most US ebay sellers will add extra money ontop of there p&p just to make a little more. so as long as youre willing to pay $14 p&p.. you'll have no problems ;) .
i dunno w0ot you aussies use? dollers?....

also i cant stand those cheap as cases bootlegs com in :? ... sucky

Bootleg stuff is so rampant, that there are actually anime stores near where I live where they sell it side by side with the official releases. I've ordered stuff from Amazon.com and gotten the bootlegs instead. (sent them back, bastards.) [/rant]

There is always the Amazon Australia site. Although on my browser for some odd reason it is all in German.
That should also take out any PAL issues that buying from american sources would have.

As another alternative, in the "heads up" forum there are quite a few direct from Japan sources listed.

Take your pick.
Personally in your situation, I'd stick with fansubs to watch the story, and use the imports for the raw footage to use for making videos.
