anime "ther'se a plural!"
Okay I'v searched the fourms and I couldn't find it. I would have thought that this would have come up.
Isn't the plural of anime anime? I'm a bit of a language nut sometimes (grammer correction is what I do, I'm a bad following my advice).
Well I'm sticking to anime as the plural, as do I use fox as its plural (but I know thats wrong). My grandmother agrees that fox soundes better than foxes.
And what's with Oxen? English is so... flavoured.

This is one of those topics that only come up when someone is nit picky while responding to someone else thread or post. The plural of anime is anime. There is no "s" at the end of it.
I watch a anime.
I watched multiple anime.

Bryan Regan did I bit on this. Absolutely hilarious. Something along the lines of "if the plural of OX is OXEN, then wouldn't the plural or BOX be BOXEN?"Nekoboy Sal wrote:Okay I'v searched the fourms and I couldn't find it. I would have thought that this would have come up.

Anyway technically speaking in Japanese there are no plural versions of most words. アニメ (anime) remains アニメ even in the plural sense. Even words like こども (Kodomo - Child) is still こども when talking about children, the only difference is that when talking about more than one child the expression becomes こども たち (Kodomo tachi - more than one Child)
But of course we aren't talking about Japanese, we're talking about english. ;^_^ And as far as english is concerned if enough people started saying 'animes' then I'm sure it would become an acceptable substitute. But given what I know as of know, anime is anime either single or plural.

I consider "animes" equally valid to "anime" as a plural.
There was never an officail decision on what the plural of anime is, since it's a Japanese word. In Japanese there are no plurals of that sort. However, anime is now an english word. The definition and meaning of anime is a bit altered from the Japanese word, therefore it is no longer a Japanese word and has become an English word derived from the Japanese term. Being an english word, either animes or anime would be fine, since there is no "correct" way in this case.
I know some would say 'anime' *is* the correct way, but all of the native Japanese speakers that I know tend to say "animes" when speaking in English. I usually use just "anime" for the plural, but there's no hardcore evidence to discredit "animes" and it is a usable word despite the common mantra that "animes isn't a word."

Wasn't it Japanimation?HeavyMetal wrote:Long long ago it was called japanime, but that was still to long and didn't sound as nice.
Japan + Animation = Japanimation
Then wasn't it shortened to Japanime
Japan + Animation - tion = Japanima / e = Japanime
Later on.. Anime
Japanime - Jap = Anime
Just some random non-mathematical math on the root of Anime.
In my opinion, that's just how I saw it over the years...

Yep it sure was Hitori.
That goes way back though. I wouldn't even think most would know of it.

I like the description at Dictionary.com:
Anime
A style of animation developed in Japan, characterized by stylized colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sex.
Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
