argentosoma (fair amount of [inteligent] action, and an awsome story)

haibane-renmie (looks like disney, but its got a strangely strong theme of racsism, oh and, its got a cool story and all the backround are watercoloured. looks amazing)

now and then, here and thier (war, propaganda, brainwashing, and children being exploited in war. awsome story)

najica (fast action, lots of pantyshots

and the most tense ending in an anime ever)

Azumanga Daioh = death by cute (and funny).

Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna is a little older, but still worth the watch IMHO.

And if you're into fanservicey romantic comedy, Onegai (Please) Twins is worth a look too.
