Defenition of "Anime"
Ok I've been putting up with it forever but now I'm sick of it. Everywhere I look now someone is argueing with someone else about what anime actually is...and even with this site, I'm scratching my head more and more to this thought:
Just wtf makes anime anime exactly?
I mean, what makes a particular animated thing anime, and what exactly is anime? And whos to say what qualifies as anime and what doesn't? I'm just sick of it cause everywhere I go people will tell me a certain anime I like "itsn't anime". Heres some examples:
"you watch that InuYasha crap? Man thats not anime!"
"Sailor Moon is gay! Its not anime...who told you that?"
"I don't know what you've heard but Revolutionary Girl Utena is NOT anime...you need to learn what anime actually is."
"If you knew what anime is then you wouldn't think Akira was anime you poser."
O__________O
So I guess the point of this thread is give us your defenition of anime.

anime is simply another way of saying "animation" Anime the word itself is shortened down from the Japanese term "animeshiyon" So, anime actually means "animation". Nothing more, nothing less. But out here in the Western world, people felt the need to differentiate westen animation and eastern animation... so Western animation is animation, and Japanese animation is given the title of 'anime'.

Then what does Manga stand for? Manga just manga or is it another abbreviated word?
I understand what manga is i hope..
Their adult animes? gore, violence, some sexual themes, language?
Cowboy Bebop, Akira, Ninja Scroll (origional movie) Devil Man, Bio Hunter?
Then what about Hentai, Im not a fan (except when i need a good laugh) is that another abbreviated word?

Exactly who are those people you're quoting? They sound idiots (in my opinion). As for the anime you've listed above (I don't know if those are actual quotes or if you're just making an example), all of them are anime. Whether or not you believe they're quality and worth watching, is your own opinion.devilmaykickass wrote:Ok I've been putting up with it forever but now I'm sick of it. Anime (in my opinion) is animation produced by a japanese company and originally had a cast of japanese voice actors.

Actually, the Japanese borrowed the French word for animate/animation, which is 'anime' to refer to 'animation.' When they say 'animeyshon' it's just them badly pronouncing English.demented wrote:anime is simply another way of saying "animation" Anime the word itself is shortened down from the Japanese term "animeshiyon" So, anime actually means "animation".
devilmaykickmyass, all those examples are anime. If people claim they are not, it's just because they don't like them or it doesn't fit their opinion of what anime is. It's like a father trying to disown a son. He may say that he has no son, but scientifically and legally it does not change the fact that half the DNA came from him and that he probably had relations with the mother.
Hentai is hentai. It probably derived from the adjective 'hen na'. Actaully 'hen' just seems to be a root for 'strange or 'different.' Like 'henmei' means 'alias', 'henkutsu' is 'eccentric', etc. Literally 'hentai' means 'strange', but the term when used in terms of anime refers to adult titles. When referring to a person, it means 'pervert'. Hentai is sometimes abbreviated by just calling it 'H' or 'ecchi'. These are all connotations and are not academically accepted uses of the words, so you won't find a reputable Japanese dictionary giving you those definitions.
