Gundam Series Recommendations

Post by Evangelion Unit 01 » Fri Aug 27, 2004 10:39 pm

I have yet to see any Gundam series and so far I have only seen parts of few. I am planning on getting one eventually, so which one would you recommend?

The 08th MS Team has got to be my pick. However, alot of them are really good.

Both Wing and Seed are very good. But like bum said, wing can get a bit heavy in the politics. Although in Seed, it can be hard to tell who is good and who is bad. Although I think that adds to the show.

Recommendables:

-Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 - Hey, if you're gonna get started, why not start from the very beginning? (available in the US in both series and movie formats)
-Gundam 0080: War In the Pocket - This OVA doesn't get as much attention as the other two due to its focus more on story and less on mecha, but it's still a damned good view (available in the US)
-Zeta Gundam - Prob. one of the best of the series, but def. not a happy one (comes out in the US in Nov...warning now...wouldn't recommend watching without seeing 0079 first)
-Gundam: Char's Counterattack - While a bit rushed, this is still a good finale for the Amuro vs Char rivalry (once again, best if watched with MSG and Zeta knowledge beforehand)
-Gundam F91 - One of the first attempts to take Gundam in a new direction...again, a bit rushed, but still an interesting one to give a viewing (coming to DVD in the US in Nov.)
-Gundam X - One of the better AUs out there.

Now for two which...I liked them, but they don't always score well:
-G Gundam and Turn A Gundam: Both of these have a serious 'like it or hate it' vibe to them...but if you can get into them, they're worth the time.

That about wraps it up...

I can positively NOT recommend G Gundam. Unless you're like me, a big G Gundam fan. How can you know if you're a G Gundam fan? Here's a little quiz:

1) When watching two mecha fight, do you wish they would yell stupid attack names, like Dragonball Z?

2) While watching the angsty 'drama' inherent in mecha shows, do you just yell at the TV "GET ON WITH IT, BRING ON THE CHALLENGERS!"

3) Do you want your pilots to be realistic characters torn about their duties, or do you want caricatures of various nationalities DOING BATTLE, AND STILL OCCASIONALLY BEING TORN UP ABOUT THEIR DUTIES?

If you answered "yes", "YES!", and "HUH? BRING ON THE CHALLENGERS ALREADY!" then you will love G Gundam.

Really, G Gundam is a much better series than most think it is. :) But ti's still a bit silly. I also recommend Gundam X, if you can find it, that's a great series.
Life's short.
eBayhard.

For the sake of being the nerd that clears this up...actually the yelling out mecha attack names was meant to be more of a nod towards the old-school super robot series (stuff like Mazinger Z and Getter Robo...kind of ironic since the director then went on to work on the first of the Getter Robo OVAs)

But I digress...

You have a point...and besides, G Gundam is acctually pretty good. I am a fan of George and the Rose Gundam.

(sorry for double-posting, but there is no EDIT button...)
Anyways, if you want to see the two I reccomended you should at least know most of the stry beforehand, wether or not that means watching the whole Gundam 0079 seriese or just reading up a little, is up to you...
