THE DREADED LIVE ACTION ANIME ADAPTATIONS
WhY?!!!! Just for a recap of all the anime who have unfortuantley been caught between big hollywood's cross hairs.
Akira(On hold duo to Stephen Norringtons depature)
Ninja Scroll
Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
and Dragon Ball Z.
Are there really no oringinal Ideas left in Hollywood? Being a ispiring filmmaker it makes me sad that my fellow artist can just learn from Anime instead of copying it completly. Like in first days of film it was plain and dry until they saw that in cartoon the artist moved the camera around instead of just having one dull flat shot.

i know, they will almost certainly be bad if we are to judge by those that have already come e.g. Fist of the North Star, man was that bad!
i think the main problem is that Anime is generally so unreal that it's completely impossible to do a live action remake that looks good, let alone do the original anime justice...

hollywood could do live action remakes of many different animes
the thing that screws them up probably is that the producers only look at numbers, and dont actually watch the anime
ratings
profits
fan base
some other things that could have to do with it is time constraints, budget, and too many changes to personality of the character
also the editing procedure kills it too

Good feedback. hope to hear more from you guys. Like cowboy bebop, there is no way in hell they can make that movie. With out it being total crap. The evangelion movie, there only have the concept art done and there is no major studio attached to the project. Weta Digial and ADV films will not get this off the ground. It seem that they have all come to a halt. Ninja Scroll has made no progress what so ever and its been about 2 years since they anouced it. The only cast member set for the DBZ film is wrestle Bill Goldberg as Nappa. Akira just got a new director that I guess is really bad at adapted films. It seems like there going no where fast.

Last original idea was in 1996 or thereabouts.reservoireddog wrote:Are there really no oringinal Ideas left in Hollywood?
I read recently on Ain't it Cool News that porn star Asia Carrera has turned down a role in the Live Action DBZ movie.
Then again, she belongs to MENSA...

this is true, but i think my point still stands, lets look at the prospective live action remakes, shall we?Zaxafel wrote:hollywood could do live action remakes of many different animes

DBZ: the first one that comes to mind: impossible, or there abouts, the CGI would have to be more than a bit good to get the Ki blasts right, the auras around characters would have to look good (read: close to anime) and yet not tacky and "Slapped on with a paintbrush" in style. Also, can you imagine someone made up to look like Cell? or Majin Buu...or even better Babidi?....i didn't think so...and if you can...looks ridiclous doesn't it?
Eva: Giant robots? i know CGI has come a long way but still, they would have to include a scene where Unit 01 goes bersekerto satisfy some of the stupider fans and first time watchers, this would require either: someone with incredible athletic ability in a naff looking suit or some really high-action CGI which would be very difficult to get right, they need to make it look better than the latest edition of "Power Rangers"...i know it sounds easy but how can they do it and still make the Eva's movements look human enough and fluid enough to convince me, let alone a hardcore fan...............Not to mention the name changes exhibited on the concept art, and the way the look of the Eva's has actually been changed from the original designs.
Cowboy Bebop: Not so difficult, but still quite hard as it has a tonne of fans (read: is one of the most popular animes ever) and even though it is not exactly "new" still has some quite advanced CGI in it, the question is: can they make it look real and still keep the same style that the anime hadwhen they animate the bebop, do something about jet's arm and try to animate the hyperspace gates?
Ninja Scroll: For evidence here just look at some of the abilities of the 8 devils of kimon, and more specifically Tessai (rock dude) and the old ninja....dunno his name...Dakuan! their abilities would be very difficult to simulate and make it look real at the same time.
Akira: The easiest one, but if they were to follow the movie/manga plot they would need the scene from the end where tetsuo turns into a giant blob of flesh, how the hell could they do that and keep it looking real/good?
Anyways the point is this:
Animes and mangas work because they are what they are, it has been demonstrated that high-action martial arts mangas, even the most basic of concepts (i refer to the "Fist of the North Star" remake), does not work in the live action format, animes and mangas stay that way because of the sheer level of un-reality that they have in them, and until CGI is taken to at least the next level, if not a few more levels, then it just will not work because the technology will not exist to make these actions/situations/characters looks close enough to the anime and still keep the level of realism high enough to satisfy first-time viewers.
.......................the prosecution rests, your honor.

Flying alone would be impossible to recreate. Look at the matrix, how terrible it looked when Neo and Agent Smith fought. The DBZ fights are far more complicated and better. Not to say that the technology that is needed is unreachable, but not at this time. I hope that when the time comes the directors and writters of the adaptations will do the anime justice.
