Anime Movies or small OVA series
Can anyone tell me of any good Anime movies or very small OVA series (I`m talking one-DVD small) to buy? A friend of mine is going to the USA, and since we can`t find these DVDs where I live, I`d like to take the chance and ask him for one. Any genre, as long as it`s anime.
Except for the ones I already have:
Ah! Megami-sama
The End of Evangelion
Evangelion: Death and Rebirth
Mononoke Hime
My Neighbor Totoro
Cowboy Bebop
Spirited Away
Akira (fansub, unfortunately)
Yes, I had posted a similar topic but it was locked because I asked about a download (slipped my mind, I apologize to the admins and moderators). I`m posting again to get some more suggestions.
And the movie X, what`s it about?

And God spoke unto the Chicken, and He said: "Thou shalt crosseth the road", and the Chicken did cross the road, and there was much rejoicing.

The X movie is a shortened, disjointed and bastardized adaptation of the X manga made in 1995. That said, it's beautifully animated and has a number of excellent scenes, just the plot makes nearly no sense unless you've read the manga or seen the 2001 TV series. Too bad the Manga Entertainment DVD is such a poor encode.
Anyway, recommendations in no particular order:
Ghibli/Miyazaki:
Castle in the Sky
Kiki's Delivery Service
Castle of Cagliostro
Nausicaa (if it's out by the time your friend comes over)
Porco Rosso (same as Nausicaa)
OVAs:
Miyuki-chan in Wonderland
RG Veda
Tokyo Babylon
(above three really only if you're a big CLAMP fan like I am)
801st TSS Airbats (all-female acrobatic fighter squadron)
Shinesman (parody of Power Rangers-style shows)
Dragon Half (hysterical parody of Slayers-style shows, but lots of SD moments)
El-Hazard (3-DVD box set of EH and EH2, high school kids transported to fantasy world, EH is one of the first anime series I ever saw)
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna (based on Sega Saturn games, bubblehead girl-in-scanty-power-armor type of show)
Gunsmith Cats (A pair of female bounty hunters in Chicago)
Riding Bean (Same universe as Gunsmith Cats, focusing on a different mercenary)
Haunted Junction (13-episode TV series in one 2-DVD case, amusing ghosts-in-school story)
Moldiver (Classic Pioneer show from early 90's, girl get a hold of an item that turns her into a super-heroine. Beware, the subs on this DVD are pretty darn bad)
Oh! My Goddess (2 DVDs, 5 episodes. The beginning of the story that the Ah! Megami-sama movie is the latest incarnation of. The video quality isn't that great, but the story is so good, I didn't care.)
Otaku no Video (Classic GAINAX. Their mockumentary self-parody about the founding of GAINAX itself)
Movies:
Jin-Roh
Metropolis
Akira (the digital remaster makes it look wonderful)
Memories
Hope these help.

Erm, dare I say it? BOOTLEG!bason wrote:even though its not one disc, you may want to check ebay for hunter x hunter, theyre selling dvds for like 10dollars for the tv series and the 3 ovas now, international shipping, its a very worthy investment, i bought them when no seeds were for download
It would indeed be a very worthy investment if it were legit. Though I haven't seen the series at all myself, but I've heard it's good. No legit US release yet, though.
Anyway, I second the Dragon Half recommendation, and I would like to recommed the original All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku OVA/OAV. It's six episodes on one disc from ADV. It's a comedy/action series mostly, about a semi-mad scientist, his android creation, his son, and his estranged wife. Lots of fighting, comedic bits, charming bits where the android, Nuku Nuku, acts like a cat (she has the brain of one after all) and a few sentimental moments. Not deep, but highly enjoyable, and just long enough. Dragon Half, on the other hand, is hilarious but much too short.
I'd also recommend Grave of the Fireflies. It's by Studio Ghibli. It's very sad, but very beautiful at the same time.
Anything else I'd want to recommend has already been recommended.

It made excelent sense if you have half a brain. Seriously, I don't see how it didn't make sense. I got it the first time through. I loved it, too. Haven't seen the show or read the manga, either.
I suggest the Samurai X ova (AKA Kenshin OVAs), as well as the Escaflowne movie... Also, check out the original VHD, the animation is sloppy, but it's from 85, so it's easily excusable. Great story to it, as well.
Eh.

I'd like to add some favorites of mine.
Millenium Actress - one dvd, sub only, very good animation and a good story, told from an imaginative perspective
Tokyo Godfathers - one dvd, sub only, very humorous story of three homeless people who find a baby in the trash, often very touching too
Pet Shop of Horrors - one dvd, sub and dub, a little strange and different, four short horror stories all tied together through the pet shop, very interesting
Jin Rho - one dvd, sub and dub, a dark story of a young soldier questioning his actions and loyalties, should he follow his brigade or the young woman he is begining to love

Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?
