Post by Jaysin » Sun Nov 07, 2004 10:15 am

Hey i just got Excel Saga, can someone tell me a little about the anime? I hear that it makes fun of a lot of other anime through parodies. Can someone tell about some of the animes that Excel makes fun of? Thanks

Excel Saga parodies:

- Sci fi (in one of the later episodes, there are a lot of references to Space Battleship Yamato and Gundam specifically, which I would have been totally lost for if not for the AD Vid-Notes?)
- American B-type action movies
- Survival dramas
- Youth dramas
- Social issues dramas
- Sports anime
- Horror anime
- Dating sims
- Shoujo anime
- The USA (and American animation)
- Post-apocalyptic anime (specifically Fist of the North Star)
- Recap episodes
- One of Koshi Rikdo's earlier doujinshi
- DragonBall Z, etc.
- Animal anime
- Detective series
- The girls who sing the theme songs
- Sailor Moon at one point, along with a reference to Kare Kano (but most of the magical-girl-parodying is left to Excel Saga's OAV successor, Puni Puni Poemy)
- Etc.

Episode 17 (Excel and Hyatt go to the USA on business) is perhaps the funniest 20 minutes of anime I've ever seen.

But I wouldn't want to kill it with overhype.

I must give props to Excel Saga, it's so great mainly because of the massive satire it does and because Excel doesn't need to breathe and has moral dilemnas every mission.

The whole show is a riot. How can you not like a series that has its final two episodes named "We will not be held responsible" and "Going Too Far" respectively. Definitely something to see if you like comedy.

I agree. Excel Saga is an awesome series. Monkey baseball teams, space aliens, and the adventure of Pedro, the mexican with an afro. It really rocks. I'd recommend it to anyone.
