Anime Taboos
Minus those that air on Cartoon Network. A lot of anime stress what American society would consider taboo, such as incest, pedophilia, the entire obsession with the school girl, excessive violence, etc. I don’t know I have never been to Japan, and most of the Japanese in America tend to stick among themselves. I find it hard to believe all of this comes from such a controlled society. I know a lot of it is done in humorous ways, but nevertheless if it was done in American cartoons it would defiantly never get past the pilot stage. Are these things simply accepted in Japan, or is it just a few isolated anime directors/writers?
Is some of the more heavy stuff (Ex. Elfred Lied, Berserk) available for everyone to watch in Japan, or is it on their Payper View equivalent/ Non-Basic Cable? Is it really shown to kids, or is it marketed towards adults?

Well I got this quote that I got from GameInformer that might mean something for the last part.
"What we consuder heavy here may be perfectly normal in Japan".

I can claim the title as being the first person on a-m-v.org to submit an AMV with the artist KJ-52 on it. Yay. Hahaha.

You have to realize that a 'conservative' society like that doesn't have to share Western values - which, indeed, it doesn't. It really developed on a different path than the Western world, isolated almost completely until recent times.
The Japanese culture of war (bushido, etc.), and violent history have really given them a different outlook on violence and fear. Of course there are certain. norms on violence in media, and you won't see very much blood until late night, but I do believe it's still on regular TV.
Whereas Western culture tries to conceal things like violence, death or sex from younger audiences, Japanese culture doesn't make as much attempt to do so. As far as sex, there's no religious custom that dictates it as being immoral for anything besides its' "family-related-function". The Japanese have no trouble admitting that sex=awsm, and they don't seem to mind relaying that to the younger generation. There is, of course, a strict religious custom of concealing genitalia which has transferred into law, but other than that... you'll see all kinds of sexual under- and overtones in anime aimed at surprisingly young audiences.
It only seems strange to strictly-western people, trust me.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Basically, at least from the Japanese viewpoint
I mean certainly, a lot of prohibitive restrictions in hardline Islam for instance may seem just as weird to you as taboos on sexual and violent themes in the more conservative Western Christian culture seem to the Japanese.
