Casshern: Live-Action Anime that Doesn't Suck, Licenced!

AnimeOnDVD is reporting that the live-action Casshern movie (recently released on DVD in Japan) has been licenced by Dreamworks for American distribution.

Casshern kicks much ass, and does a nice job of modernizing a classic anime. Sure, it's not without flaws (the movie ends... 15 minutes after it ends, if you understand what I mean), but compared to other recent adaptations (Devilman, which is currently in theaters here, and Cutey Honey, which is set to come out on DVD this week or the next), it stands pretty tall. The plot/story may be a bit stretched at times, but in terms of the color and cinematography this is one of the best Japanese movies I've ever watched.

Dreamworks will probably give it the R1 release it deserves, but if you can't wait for that long then the R2 actually comes with an English subtitle track.

If Akira and Evangelion can set production values this high (as well as higher script values), we don't have to worry about them sucking.

Cutie Honey was the best camp film I've seen since But I'm a Cheerleader. But I'm still curious about those other two films.

If it is the former, I'd rather have him pitted against robots with sentient A.I. than apocalyptic mutants... Just me.

I am still wondering that about this issue. Any preliminary info on whether it is based on the live-action version already made, or if it is a straight adaptation from the anime?
