Anime you're not allowed to watch

Post by kitsunebeolnet » Mon Dec 27, 2004 10:54 am

Last night the wife got PO'd because I was watching Ikki Tousen with our 11 yo daughter. (What the wife dosen't know is that said daughter on her own snuck in on my computer and watched several episodes of Ebichu and others even worse without my permission. When I found out, she was more scared of mommy's reaction than mine. :? )

Wife thinks anything on the far side of Pokemon is too much for anyone short of High School. I'm cool with anything short of hard-core sex.

Sort of an informal poll -

If you have kids, where do you draw the line?

For those that have parents that draw limits, what are they and do you think they're fair?

My parents realized at a young age that I was more interested in how they engineered the special effects of blowing some guy's head off than trying to recreate the scene.

The one time they told me I couldn't see a movie was American Pie. A week later I downloaded the screener and flaunted it, and then they decided that I had enough good judgement to decide what was and wasn't appropriate.

In terms of anime... well, I think your wife's being a bit too restrictive, but I don't think an 11-year-old should be watching, say, the Samurai X OVA. IMHO 13 is the magical age at which you let out the slack. Really it depends on how impressionable your daughter is and whether or not she'll take any messages, negative or otherwise, from watching certain shows. And that's really something only you can decide...

Wow, I'd draw the line at Ebichu. :)

But Ikki Tousen, that's just good clean violence and near nudity. What's your wife gonna ban next, good American programming like NYPD Blue? :)

(I am being being semi-sarcastic.)

When I was a child, I was pretty much allowed to watch whatever. Myu parents did a fairly decent job of explaining the difference between reality and fiction, I think, so I've never felt the need to solve my problems Rambo or Conan-style even though those were like my favorite movies when I was 8. (Admittedly, it was the TV-edited version of Conan. But the Rambo movies weren't.) I think I grew up okay and now I faithfully serve my country in the military.... Hrm, maybe the Rambo movies DID have an effect...
Life's short.

Well I would probably just stick to the labels.. if it says 13+ then I'd just go ahead and hold back on it..

but seriously regardless of what we say on a forum board. In your instance i think its just going to have to come down to a compromise between what you and the MS. think is ok.

Heh. I figured that already but what the heck, I'm bored and wanted to start a discussion.

I thought her reaction was a >bit< extreme last night but thats nothing compared to when she heard our daughter over the weekend singing "I want a blow-up doll for Christmas" from Antartic Tribe's 'Christmas Hell' AMV and a couple of months ago we had to teach her to show a little discretion because she kept singing 'Girls who like Girls' from the AMV I made. (Daughter loves almost any anime and AMVs. I'm trying to figure out how to make a Sana-chan cosplay for Ohayocon.)

I don't have kids, but I do have parents living in teh house. Granted, we're all adults, but anyway...

I actually avoid watching things that are, well, too fixed in the Japanese/Anime-self-reference realm of humor/symbolism. These cause too many raised eyebrows and unneccesary questions. So I don't think I'd watch something like FLCL with them, for instance; too much explaination, very likely that they'll complain that I wasted their time, and there's more than a good chance they'll think of me as even more of a weirdo. Fan service I'd avoid also.

I try to stick with things that resemble reality and have some semblance of seriousness in them. My mother is a huge fan of Monster, for instance.

Interestingly, she actually also liked the Samurai X OAV quite a bit.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I can watch whatever I darn well please, :D though I might get whacked with a frying pan if it's henti. I let my kids watch whatever they want, the youngest is 18. As for those with younger children, you should know the content and judge it according to your own moral standards.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

I would say anyone under 12 or so shouldnt watch Beserk..for sure, assload of blood in that. Samurai X OVA, Jin Roh and Akiras kinda bad also..specially the part with the herendous sounds of the chick screaming and her body exploding with blood.

Yea, I would say something like that, but I have 2 little brothers who watch more violent anime than I do, but the reality of it is, it all depends on the maturity of the person watching it

In my case there is no anime that I may not watch.
 A dubious perk of being an adult I guess.
As for kids (0-12):
No Hentai.
No Yuri.
No Yaoi.
Nothing that will probably go over their heads.
Nothing with unnecessary carnage and/or gore.
Etc.
Of course every anime selection would be a 'trial by basis'.
As in no group totally forbidden, except hentai.
About the Mrs...
My good man, as a woman I've only one tip: Nod.
Not telling to patronize your wife but pick your fights.
Women have a way of winning almost every time, I should know.
Truly the basis of a good marriage is a lot of nodding and alone time.
And that statement goes both ways.
