A lot of people have, good sir or madam - it is one of the few gems that actually made it to American TV...

It's my 3rd-favorite anime of all time. That should say enough.
It's also among the only few that I have constant urges to re-watch again and again. :)
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

It's quite obviously a political documentary about Abe Lincoln.

FLCL was neat, but the best aspect was the soundtrack. Not quite as good as the Philharmonic Orchestra's soundtrack to Giant Robo, but right behind it.

I own both soundtracks (Three, if you count both of the FLCL's).

Yes there is a plot and no its not all that hard to make out just wtf is going on...
After watching it through the second or third time I picked up more on the story than I would have ever gotten from reading anothers review on it.
Just keep rewatching it, it will make sence soon enough :D

It's not awfully complicated by itself, but it does have the advantage of having a lot of quirky symbolism that you can dig into endlessly (and, probably, needlessly, but it's still a fun way to expend some grey matter...)
It also has a lot of hidden anime references, shameless gainax self-referencing, and tricky stuff you wouldn't catch unless you watched the series more than once.
I don't think it's awfully complex, but it does both make you watch it more than once to really get (and that does piss people off on occasion) and encourage you to watch it more and more just for teh fun...

I had a horrible habit of noticing things like the girlfriend's underwear come flying off with Naota sitting in her lap.

Tsk tsk, 6th graders these days.

I'll have to watch through all the director commentaries at one point.

Yeah it makes sense the 2nd or 3rd time u watched it and then it goes from mindbendingly plotless to mindbendingly complex and youre sitting in the fetal position sucking your thumb

and btw the manga is just great, id say IMO its better than the anime

That's NOT going to help you much, perhaps the opposite
