Eva movie?
Whatever happened to the Evangelion movie? I haven't been around the forums at all and was curious to what became of it.

...if it even makes it that far, though.
Look at the evidence: Hints at changes in the story since it was announced, ADV Films not commenting since the DC version came out with the pre-production work, no recent solid news at all, and no mention of a live-action NGE film in the NGE Platinum Editions anywhere.
The first point is perhaps the biggest. Even if everything is done, will it be Eva? I mean, there are so many ways that this movie project could turn sour.
Also, conversion from anime/manga to live-action projects haven't really worked well overall -- just look at The Guyver (which I personally like, but it's a B-grade movie and doesn't really follow the original manga [or anime, for that matter]).
On the other hand, if they really work at it and try not to make this a generic "teen-scene movie with robots", then it could be a wonderful film. (Besides, the Eva's are not robots; if they get anyone on the production staff who says they are, then you know that they don't know what Evangelion is and that things are going to go bad.)

I can't quote verbatim, but at the ADV panel at UshiCon in Austin, one of the head honchos of ADV said that they were still in the process of finding a director and they had "a few solid choices lined up." Also, they downplayed the names on those production sketches as being "highly preliminary" and that they were going to "stick to the spirit of Eva." He sounded sincere enough.
Life's short.

I would say on a basic level they are seen as mechs but as much as they appear as mechs, there are plenty if not more that show acting otherwise.bum wrote:Ok, story wise they arent robots, they're mecha. Despite the whole human thing, on a basic level eva's are just mech's like in every other anime. And for most of the series they function just like any other mech.GloryQuestor wrote: (Besides, the Eva's are not robots;

I expect the movie to tank. It'll do well financially for maybe a week as all the Eva fanboys and fangirls rush out to see it, but I doubt anybody besides them has a chance to like it. Eva is definitely a love it or hate it thing so I doubt the critics will give it decent reviews. Those who know the source material will criticise it even more. The movie doesn't stand a chance at being something groundbreaking or original so they'll probably use the visuals to sell it. Which, if it's anything true to the show, will dissappoint a lot of movie goers expecting nothing but giant "robot" fights instead of teenage melodrama.
Then again, I'm a rabid anti-EVA fanboy so I could be wrong.

Iether way this movie turns out its gona be good. If it works and actualy is good, it'l be an enjoyable movie. If it sucks, its gona suck so bad that it would be fun watching it just for laughing at how sucky it is.

Their are enough anime onesTsunami Jones wrote:I didn't know that there were enough movies of this genre to be able to actually make one "generic."GloryQuestor wrote: a generic "teen-scene movie with robots", then it could be a wonderful film.

"Mecha" is anything mechanical. "Mech" is a derivative of mecha that is used in the stragetic paper-and-dice RPG "BattleTech" (but may not originate from).
Technically speaking the EVA units are not robots in that they're flesh and blood underneath the metal exteriors, but the Evangelion series would fall under the "giant robot" genre. They're basically giant mechanical humanoid contraptions piloted by humans so that would make them "robots".
