What are the anime essentials?

Post by Bulghod » Sun Feb 06, 2005 5:06 pm

This is the polar opposite of What anime can the world do without?

What anime(s(es)) (don't know the plural for anime) are almost required to become an anime fan/otaku today?

I'm saying DBZ because that's how half of the world finds out about anime, Eva because it is one of the most referenced anime around, and as much as i hate to say it, Inuyasha, because it is currently the big sh*t as far as Japanese animations go.

Bebop, Trigun, and Ah! My Goddess are a few more of the basics.

If a person wants to start watching anime that has lots of gore and/or nudity, definetely check out Ninja Scroll the Movie and if possible check out X/1999 the movie as well (yea, I know; the X/1999 movie sucked in comparison to the manga, but it did get me used to the excessive gore).

Sailor Moon.

Seriously, I'd say that all of Miyazaki's movies are essential. Even people who don't enjoy anime are big fans of his work! [One of my friends hates it when we talk about anime...but she can't get enough of Totoro!]

To tell the truth, there are tons of great anime series out there. I own no less than around 15 complete series in my collection, and most of them are "essential". (That is including series that are just coming out on DVD that I haven't yet completely collected, but have already pre-ordered.)

One of the things about "essential" anime is the fact that one's essential is another one's non-essential, usually because of genre.

So, here is a quick list of what I believe is essential anime based on animation genres (but many might disagree with):

- Giant Robot / Mecha: Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Contemporary Science Fiction: Cowboy Bebop
- Comedy: Excel Saga (+ Puni Puni Poemy)
- Contemporary Fantasy: Record of Lodoss War (+ Legend of Crystania)
- Modern-Day Setting: Noir
(My second pick would be Read or Die / R.O.D. The TV, but Noir is more based in the modern real world than R.O.D. is.)
- Cyberpunk: Ghost in the Shell
(My second pick would be the .hack series, which comprises the anime series SIGN, the four PS2 video games [and LIMINALITY], and the Legend of the Twilight anime / manga)
