why does everyone seem to hate dubs?
Why does everyone seem to hate dubs? And if your one of them, if you still decide to see the series, do you watch the japanese version with subs? or the fan-sub versions? I've only really run into one series that the voice acting wasn't great, but the subs we're even worse. The name of the anime doesn't come to mind at the second unfortunately.

It seems like Japanese take more time to cast perfect voice actors for the parts they are filling, and once that voice actor plays that part, accepting another voice in its place is difficult to do.
On top of that, American voice actors SOUND like cartoon characters too much. Its like they think they have to force it, whereas Japanese voice actors seem more natual. Take Shiinji in Evangelion: In the Japanese version, he sounded like a 14 year old boy, reguardless of who did the voice. In the American version, he sounds like an 18 year old forcing it (Geebus i hate it when he screams in english...so unfelt).
There have been 3 or 4 series i could stand in english for my friend's sake, like Cowboy Bebop, but for the most part, Japanese voices are more original, fit it better, have better emotion, and just make the character better, IMHO.

It's a preference in which people take WAY too seriously (sometimes to a point of ignorance).

One of the worst reasons I've heard of for those that do not like dubs is in regards to the lip sync. They think that the Japanese actors sync better with the lip flapping. If you watch the lips and listen instead of reading the subs you'll see the Japanese often sync worse than American actors. The only times you can really complain is if the voice acting is done prior to the animation like Akira.
In the age of the DVD the dub vs. sub holds far less merit. You buy the DVD, press a button on your controller and now you're listening to the Japanese actors. Press again and it's English. If you're lucky you'll also get Spanish and French. If it's not Region 1, you'll get other languages. VHS meant you either shell out the money for subbed OR dubbed. You only get one or the other. Now you occasionally get subbed only on DVD.
Oh yeah. I like dubs, but either way is fine with me.

Almost every time I watch a sub, I can almost hear it's two or three voice actors covering for all characters, with a different tone every time. This sounds unnatural, makes them speak slowly, and reminds me of clowns talking with funny voices...
Also, on at least two occasions (Mononoke and GitS), dubbing actually changed the meanings of dialogs. Made them more childlish and simple, and in case of Mononoke - there were many many more dialogs inserted when people's lips weren't showing.
This is not always true, and my prime example of *very* good dub was Tenchi Muyo OAV - Ayeka's voice was perfect, much better than original.
Just my opinion.

Personally, I don't have many grievances against dubs - if they're done well.
By "well," I'm not talking oscar-winning performances here - Bebop, etc. - I mean the halfway decent ones. DBZ, for instance - pretty mediochre series when you really think about it, but the dubbing worked out perfectly once it got onto Cartoon Network.
As long as the actors aren't terrible, or try to ham it up - the first arc of Rave Master :p - OR the writers decide to screw around with the plot/script too much and make it too "child friendly" - again, Rave Master (You maniacs! You blew it up; you blew it all up!) - then it's okay with me. .hack//Sign is one of the better ones, and most movies that appear in theaters extraodrinary as well. Let's face it, Hollywood wouldn't release an anime in theaters half-assed, they DO want to make money.
Most people say they suck just because it isn't in its original context. That's like saying you're going to learn French just to read The Three Musketeers - there's a perfectly good version out there that's just as good as the original, yet in a language you can understand.
Dubs aren't bad on the whole nowadays, not Speed Racer bad at least, so why not save a few bucks and watch them on Adult Swim or the Anime channel - or even buy the DVDs and watch 'em that way, cause you DO speak ENGLISH.

Just enjoy watching the anime.
Listen to the meanings of the words not just the word alone.
unless you dont understand what they are saying, read the dialog and just continue watching the anime and grasp the storyline and enjoy it.
Sheesh so many people are "anal" in things.
heres a metaphor for it:
Who cares if its a 5yr old girl screaning "HELP, WOLF" vs a 80yr old women screaming "HELP, WOLF"
point is, they are calling for HELP....

I pretty much watch everything in dub, but I don't reall ymind if it is in japanese and subtitled. Most people I heard hate it for the fact that the raw form is the best or the thing is that they saw a fan sub or something like that before it came out to america or any other country and got use to the voice allready in the anime, so they would hate to change the voice. I know I hate it when they change the voices in the english versions, it doesn't feel like the same character.
The only ironic thing is that those with boots that only watch subs better understand japanese because I have heard that their subs are really really awful. Of course they deserve it for buying the boot, I guess you really do get what you pay for
Other than that I am going to attempt to learn japanese and I know where I am going to school that they are going to offer it next semester. So I will try and learn as much as I can and then when I have mastered it I will rewatch all my animes in their orginal japanese and see how differnent they truly are.
Either way I don't care what language so long as I hear the story and understand it. That's all that truly matters in the end.
The only dubs I hated where the original BBC and love hina was bad but it grew on me. There was also Nadesico, and .hack was not that good but not that bad. It was in the middle. Still after the first few episodes I got use to it. the way I base it is how well the voices go with the chracters. The only exception is BBC and their lip syinc was way off at times.
The worst case I found was one girl told me she read the entire Berserk Manga in its orginal Japanese and when I told her I was reading it in English she got discuseted. I also told her I watch all my anime dub when I can, and she got even more discusted. But never the less, I didn't care as long as I got the sotry, and I really liked the Berserk dub for that matter too.
