Orginal Eva Vs the Plantinum Eva

Post by Evangelion Unit 01 » Mon Mar 07, 2005 11:22 am

I really just want to know what the differneces are and if it is worth getting. I have the orginal series on DVD plus the two director cut dvds and death and rebirth and end of evangelion. So, then what are the major or minor differneces between the orginal and the Plantinum?

Depends... If money is tight and you have not seen a lot of other anime, I would suggest that you go get something else.

I have the first 5 DVDs of the platinum series. First of all, you have never seen or heard Evangelion better. The picture is sharp, the colors are vibrant and it looks as if it was animated recently (minus computer animation of course). There is no more Eva giggle when you go from scene to scene. The sound is also mixed in a amazing 5.1 dolby digital :D This is for both the Engrish and Japanese tracks.

Each DVD comes with liner notes detailing the episodes contained on it, part of a glossary of Eva terms and descriptions of the different Evas and angels. The DVDs themselves are a bit of a mix. There is usually at least one commentary per disc and sometimes more. The commentaries are a bit hit or miss sometimes providing insight other times it seems to be voice actors talking about how they loved this or that. Several of the discs have full length animatics showing how episodes were put together. Others have documentaries talking about the Evangelion legend, all the Asuka marketing, to how the remix was done.

The extras are all nice, but I got it for the sound and the picture of the show itself. I love it personally and considered it a must have, but it depends on how much you like the show. If you are a casual fan, no don't get it. If you are a big fan and you have (or will get) a top of the line TV with sound system, yes by all means get this!! :P

If you've seen the original Evangelion DVDs (and even better, edited with them), you'll know that the video quality is piss-poor and is only marginally improved with the best of AVS scripts.

In 2003, Gainax released the Eva: Renewal box set. They went back and cleaned up the entire series, frame-by-frame, plus both movies. I'm sure someone will come around with screenshots, but you will be AMAZED at the quality difference.

Since ADV couldn't licence Renewal as a whole (Manga Ent. owns the rights to the movies), ADV licenced the Renewal TV and is releasing it as Platinum. I believe they've brought all the VAs back to redub the audio (5.1 surround too, if I'm not mistaken), commentary tracks, extras, and a helluva lot more.

If the original DVDs don't bother you, I suppose you could save your money, but believe me, the video shines.

Oh, they're freaking beautiful. I also love the little booklets because they talk about all the references that most normal people wouldn't get.
It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.

Quite frankly, if you need more than that to make your decision you need help.

It's the original voice actor recordings from several years ago. The director cut episodes (22,23, and 24) will be on the last two DVDs with the original episodes just as they were released earlier last year. The difference will be the 5.1 sound mix, improved video and extras. I don't think they needed to record it again a third time. Those actors are a bit hard to track down and some of their voices have changed a good bit in recent years.

My only complaint of the remastered video is that some of the blacks are a bit difficult to make out contrasted to other blacks. Other than that, it is utterly gorgeous. :P

I knew after I bought the original Eva DVD box set that I'd put $1,000 into the franchise, so me getting Platinum is inevitable.

Although actually, I only own Volume 1, as it came out right before I left for Tokyo and I wanted to ensure I got the box. I'll get Vol 2-6 when I get home, vol 7 when it comes out...

...and then start deciding whether or not I want to remake Warning for a second time. Oh the agony.

But yeah, I watched Vol 1 and was amazed. Kinda makes you wish they could have released it like that way in the first place...

Gainax productions from the early and mid 1990s looked like that had brilliant and innovative ideas implimented on inferior film stock and crappy splicing technology.

And yeah, you should see Episode 19: Introjection where Shiji quits and then comes back to fight the monofiliment angel. From the fight inside Central Dogma to the point where Eva-1 becomes aware....The sound.... the picture quality... just rocks... I had the system cranked up to 11 playing it.
