Looking for a particular style....[fantasy]

Post by Raz176 » Wed Mar 16, 2005 7:14 am

I love animé to pieces, and after finally finding out means to watch it hear in England, I've been getting all sorts of series!

Literally, without digital television, cable or satelite, I've only got 4 channels, and the closest thing we get to animé is Pokémon and Digimon... Which are both fairly... well... childish really.

However, I've recently been watching much more animé on DVD after getting a multi regional player, and since then have gotten the following series!

Azumanga Daioh
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 a.d.
Chobits
Cowboy Bebop
Fist of the North Star
Full Metal Panic
Gungrave
Love Hina (is on it's way)
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Outlaw Star
Virus Buster Serge

Unfortunately, due to the length of Naruto and Inu Yasha, they cost quite a pretty penny and aren't so easy to find... So I'm putting those aside for now.

Now, onto the point of my post. I would really love some animé that has a sort of swords and sorcery theme. Like the Shining Force games (that were on the Genesis) or like Alundra (game on the PSX).

Something like that. Can anyone recommend a series that has this sort of theme?

I apologise sincerely for my newbiness, we really don't have much in the way of animé in this country, and I'm not much of a surfer on the net...
These obscenities man has created. The corruption and pollution.... All of these will be annihalated...

If you are looking for something that has swords and sorcery in it (like old school Tolkein stuff) I would recommend "Record of the Lodoss War". It is a traditional fantasy story done in an anime format.

I would also recommend that you look at "Visions of Escaflowne". Not entirely traditional, I found it to be very enjoyable none the less.

You can find entries for them both in the encyclopedia section of www.animenewsnetwork.com

You can find some very good reviews at www.animeondvd.com

Hmmm...
I know that "Shaman King" has this stuff. It's a great Anime and has lots of these "light battles". Samurai swords 'n' stuff are allso involved.
I can't tell u one concrete link, but try to use a search engine.
Atleast that's how I found this stunningly great site. :D

As Mr. Barker has already said, both Recocrd of Lodoss War and Escaflowne are both excellent series for that genre. You also might want to try Slayers, Berserk, or even Orphen.

Slayers is good (and has attained somewhat classic status), but Slayers Next is better.

I would not call Utena a fantasy anime. It IS a fairy tale anime in the Shoujo style. Lots of sword fighting too. It is a truly wonderful series.

If you like Escaflowne, you could always give Aura Battler Dunbine a try. It's a bit more war-oriented, but, all things considered, pretty well done.
