A discussion on realistic school comedy anime...

Post by OmniStrata » Mon Apr 04, 2005 11:24 am

Sensei no Ojikan

School Rumble

Azumanga Daioh

Great Teacher Onizuka

etc. etc.

The [oh forgot to type, Boys Be] genre of realistic high school life in anime is branching out and more and more titles of these are appearing. Thing is, which comedy do you think came out properly?

I think School Rumble was what Azumanga Daioh could have and should have been. I guess it might be cause I'm partial to its uber zexy character design and comedic references. Then again, you can't lose with cat chomping hands gags...
The Matrix gag reference in one of the eps had me and my friends laughing for a while. Repeated viewings made it harder to breathe we laughed so hard...
Which high school life Comedy anime would you recommend to your friends? [and to me, these things are getting more common and it'd be good to filter the good from the classic from the etc. Not necessarily from the bad cause I haven't really seen a BAD one, though I must say Cromartie High School's die-cause-it's-ugly character design would be in my BAD book]
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

I personally loved Azumanga Daioh; only others I've seen so far are Kare Kano and Sensei no Ojikan (up to episode 9).

SnO started out funny enough, but after a while things started to get a little predictable, owing mostly to the general one-dimensionality of the characters.

If you can find Gokusen, I highly recommend it. But I'll also recommend Here is Greenwood and Happy Lesson, because you don't know what you'll like until you've seen it.

I'll have to join Scintilla in expressing my love for Azumanga Daioh. It's simple and it's for the most part clean (except for a few notable exceptions - "She's American!") and you wouldn't think that a show about half a dozen high school girls could be so good.

Makes you wonder if they'll do a Yotsuba anime someday...

I'll say that I wish I went to a co-ed school :(
..enough of that, now I'll say that GTO is a great example of how school should have been, but will never be. I didn't think much of Azumanga Daioh however after reading the manga, it's begining to grow on me.

Wow, its strange how nobody mentioned Cromartie High School, I mean just the manga is really funny, it doesnt make sense whatsoever... its just pointless thoughts coming together about a guy trying to fit in with delinquents without making himself seem very strange
This life of mine is ending, my soul devouring me whole, but I wont give in to my destruction, my being of darkness

 In what world is Azumanga Daioh realistic?

Kare Kano is very entertaining though. I would suggest that to anyone who isn't looking for your typical "guy-loves-magical-girl" show.

How long ago were you in high school, or are you still? Total insanity is not as uncommon as you might think.

If you consider that all the humorous little cutscenes only happen in the characters' minds, I think it's perfectly reasonable to call it realistic.

Yes indeed, in that way very realistic. And, really, the character 'archetypes' just have a great 'flavour' to them.

I was a total Osaka in school...

...no, scratch that. I still am.
