Post by The Non-Professional » Wed Oct 09, 2002 4:49 pm

Ever talked to a friend or someone metion an anime and they are like "Oh! I've seen that cartoon, i like it." i hate it when they call it a cartoon cause its not a cartoon anime is something more than a cartoon to me. or am i just weird by getting defensive like that?

that happens to me some times, but I don't really care. So they used the wrong adjective, at least they're watching it.

If the anime you were watching was meant to be humorous, it is a cartoon. Anime and cartoon are not exclusive terms, there is a lot of overlap between the two.

I think people tend to use "cartoon" to mean animated programs that are designed for children, and have little if any appeal to most adults. Dora the Explorer, for example. It usually bugs me too, but only because of the "children-only" connotation the word "cartoon" has obtained in our society over time.

I have never considered anime a cartoon, but family members have. Now adays they understand that many animes are more mature than live action anything. Its one of those things that annoy me:

1. anime are cartoons

2. dragonball z is the greatest anime ever.

I just end up using "cartoon" since that's pretty much what my friends understand. I say "anime", and their all like "huh?". Then I give and example they'll understand, and they say"oh, cartoons". So I end up sighing a lot. :(

Japanese Anime can certainly be cartoons. The definition of cartoon is "a satirical animated sketch". So you'd be lying (or ignorant) if you didn't consider Dragon Half a cartoon.

I agree with this. I think people just get all huffy about the word "cartoon" because they are overdefensive about being anime fans.

Angel_Killer also had a good point in that the terminology isn't the important part, the important part is that they watch it. :)

That's a banner I made for my webpage and pretty much explains how I feel about the terms.

I know anime are also cartoons, but most language has more meaning in what it means in a cultural or social way than a literal sense. The perfect example of this is everyone's favorite 'F' word

So, in japan anime means all cartoons. Well here in the states, to the majority of people it means a japanese cartoon. So who am I to stand in the way of progress? Americans tend to think cartoon means something for a kid so you could try and change an entire country's way of thinking about the term "cartoon" or you could just say anime and let them figure out what the difference between shoujo and hentai on their own :p

But as Excel so lovingly put it, Viva animation!
